Matt Mooney

Post by AGGIEinIOWA » April 1st, 2019, 9:38 am

I'd like to know how close former USD guard Matt Mooney was to being an Aggie. He's a great player that has been fun to watch in the tournament with Texas Tech. I know his transfer short list was down to Tech, Creighton, Northwestern, Arizona State, and Utah State. It's scary to imagine he and Sam in the same back court, two fierce and unselfish competitors that do anything to win. You can see what type of player Mooney became by playing under Smith for 3 seasons. Obviously he enjoyed playing for Coach Smith but I imagine the lure of playing in a P6 conference was likely the deciding factor. Considering his Red Raiders are in the Final Four, he's probably satisfied with his decision.

I honestly never heard his name as a real possibility of transferring to USU. Coach Smith was asked about him almost from day 1 and he always made it sound as if Mooney was going to follow his dreams of playing at a P5 and particularly with a contender that needed his skill set. I'm sure there was some publication out there that may have speculated that he may follow coach Smith but I don't think that was ever the plan.

We made the top 5. We were eliminated when he cut it to top 3.

I've seen him play in Lubbock, and I think with him, Utah State would have been a top 15 team. He would have been a great fit with Merrill. With that said, we could have just as easily lost Queta to Tech as well, and he would be averaging 7 points and 6 rebounds with Owens and Odiase.

This is incorrect. Jarrett Culver was one of the more highly recruited kids that year coming out of high school.

If I am reading his 247 page correctly he was a 3 star coming out of hs.

Texas tech would be the biggest darkhorse champion of my lifetime. Chris beard is an amazing coach. Uconn was a 7 seed and won the title a few years ago, but they were loaded with talent.
