So if and when Queta stays in the draft, we will have one spot open?

Yes, assuming all the other players on the list are still here next year as well.

I'm not so sure. They are pretty happy with the guards they have.

I think we're hoping to have some really good walk-ons at guard this year.

I guess we found 1 current point guard as a walk-on. Maybe shoot for a second one?

We do have about 17 guys that are in the 6’5 to 6’9 range that can play the 2 or 3.

I like Abel, but he is our only point guard.

Fakira has gone home. He will not be back. And no we will not necessarily be taking a guard for the last spot. The coaches feel they have something really special going, especially if Queta comes back and they do not throw a wrench in the machine.

I'm not even sure what this means. We're going to have 13 scholarship players regardless. Why would adding depth at the PG position as the 13th scholarship player rock the boat any more than adding a 4th or 5th SG/SF or another big? It would seem reckless not to add another PG -- unless the coaching staff believes one of the other players can handle the role or they want to move away from an offense that utilizes a traditional PG at all.

I guess what I'm saying is, trust the coaching staff. They know what they have and adding a 6th guard would not benefit the team unless he has to sit out a year. Adding another guard to play next year pushes someone out of the rotation that the staff feels has value to the team.

Agreed, why would an athletic guard that can get to the rim and finish/dish hurt team chemistry? Maybe they haven’t found one with the right attitude yet but it is something we lacked last year. Can Abel, Sam, or Brito bring the ball up the court, of course. Is Sam a great passer, yes. If we can find the right player, I still like the idea of an athletic guard that can make things happen against teams like Washington. I’d bet Sam’s shooting percentage would increase with a ball handler that could take some pressure off him.

I mean, we aren’t coaches but it was pretty obvious to everybody here that another PG is a pretty big need.

I like Porter but he doesn’t score enough. Merrill needs someone that can take some attention away from him. You know your stuff, but to be honest, I hope you’re wrong in your assessment.

I am sure if the PG that some of you are wanting comes along and is a perfect fit, then the staff will be interested. FIT being the key word! I think they are going to be cautious not to get into a "subtraction by addition" situation. So much of last year's accomplishments were not done by athleticism and skill, but by team attitude and chemistry. There's a reason we beat teams that in all honesty had more talent and better individual players.

On another note, I think we are all in for a pleasant surprise next year when we see the improvement of Abel, Miller, Bean and Brito. I just feel this staff has IT, when it comes to player development. Not only in getting the players to recognize the holes in their game, but in motivating them to do so.

Merrill will never play long in the NBA if he doesn't improve ball handling. This staff needs an NBA player/s to recruit at a higher level. I think this is something that stew was never able to do and it's why I grew tired of him. I won't grow tired of this staff *if* it plays out well with player development.

Did you miss the part where Queta is attending the NBA Combine next week? And that our recruiting class is the highest ranked we have ever had? And that we won the MW regular season and tourney championships for the first time in our history?

And you’re already talking about when you will get tired of this staff???

We need another PG for the following reasons. I want the team to be better next year.

1. Take scoring pressure off of Sam, especially if Queta doesn't come back. We need 3 scorers in double figures. This was exposed in the NCAA tournament.

2. Abel is ok, but can't consistently get to the basket, really only Sam can. We become a dominant jump shot team without somebody who can beat the d off the dribble.

3. What if Abel gets hurt, we have no point. What if Abel tears his ACL in November. You need somebody to be an actual PG.

I don't really give a damn which camp Queta goes to...

Yes, of course Queta has a chance. However, he can't shoot a 20 footer on a regular basis which is the basis of almost every NBA franchise's offense besides the teams that are being left behind or are stagnant at best. He can't make his free throw shots either. He struggles from time to time from beyond 10 feet. He's just not ready. Sure, he's got all the potential in the world but it doesn't equal an NBA player with a 5-10 year career.

I'm waiting now for all the examples of slugs that still play for a bad franchise or a stagnant one and how Queta can be just as good. .....

No, people. That's not a recipe for success. Prove your game first then go to the draft. Queta hasn't done that. I love Queta's potential. But that's all it is.

Merrill can be a hellova NBA player if he develops his ball handling.

P.p.s.
I'm really happy that our Aggies finally have a coach with some vision to develop players into something beyond just a great college ball player. Every Aggie fan should be celebrating this right now instead (with fingers crossed that the plan will work) of talking about how that they should be doing something else.

I don't disagree with you, but... half of the NBA are slugs that play for a bad franchise. All Queta needs is one team. Good thing the Raiders don't have pick in the draft.

I was on the “Need a PG and need it now” bandwagon but really basketball is positionless anymore. PGs who dribble for 20 seconds make life easier on defenses. Passing and cutting will get you just as many looks at the rim as a probing PG.
The Washington game was closer than the final score. We’ll see further development of our current roster in the offseason I have no doubt. And defensively we were right there against the more athletic and individually talented teams this season.
Come on guys, what did we witness this year? Smith taught us that 5 guys, no matter how white and unathletic they are, can score and can defend at an elite level if they are unified. We clamored for years for Stew to not just bring in guys every spring that will be gone by the next. Smith and Co are being choosy that’s what we wanted. They recruit talent, not positions. They recruit players to compete, not players to counsel out. Seeing what his players mean to him I can understand why he doesn’t want to recruit guys he’ll have to send away later.
If the right guy is found we’ll go after him, but to be honest I haven’t been overly impressed by the juco and grad transfer guards that have been named so far. I wouldn’t want any of them to take minutes from our current guards.

Karwowski is a C. At least that's what it says a couple of times on the official announcement. One time in real big letters at the top, 7'2" - 230 LB - C, so it's like the staff is making it clear what spot he's going to play here.

The team needs another PG, but as has been said, it has to be a good fit. This team won the MW and made the tourny with the PG it has now. I don't know, but this team may be pretty tight, and feel like they did pretty well last season with that PG and could do better next year. They may get upset if someone said something to the PG like...........thanks for doing such a good job last season, for helping us win the MW for the first time, and getting to the dance for the first time since 10-11. But we think we can do better at your spot so we're going to bring in this other PG and set you on the bench.

That might not go over too well.

Karwowski is a C. At least that's what it says a couple of times on the official announcement. One time in real big letters at the top, 7'2" - 230 LB - C, so it's like the staff is making it clear what spot he's going to play here.

Sometimes you just shouldn't mess with team chemistry.

Wasn’t there a Trevor Dorius who was a HS teammate of Koby who walked on and then went on a mission?

They weren't HS team mates. McEwen went to Wasatch Academy, Dorius went to Wasatch High.

But yes, Trevor did go on a mission. I'll see if I can find out if the current coaching staff is expecting him to return to Utah State.

What the team really lacked after Knight left was a quick slashing type guard who could defend someone quick. Still hope the coaches find that player.

You’re right, I guess I shouldn’t necessarily say “positionless” as Smith clearly likes to have a rim protector on the floor which we typically consider as the center. However the rest of his system isn’t as predicated on the traditional player roles we’re used to.
Instead of PG, SG, SF, PF, or C with each guy being individualized to the skills necessary for that particular position, he wants 5 guys on the floor to play sound defense, unselfish offense, get out in transition, and to avoid turnovers.

But you’re right, he likes a rim protector or center to anchor the D.

We are currently looking at four guards but all four guards would have to sit out next season.
