BSU will make $560,000/year over the next 15 years for the naming rights to its basketball arena. This more than doubles what it was annually making under the 15-year Taco Bell agreement which expires in July. To offer a comparison, USU will make $286,000/year, over the next 18 years (through 2037), for the naming rights on its FOOTBALL stadium. There is no information as to what USU makes on the naming rights to the Spectrum, if anything.

BSU gets $833,000/year (through 2029) for the naming rights on its football stadium. CSU makes $2.5 million/year (for 15 years) on the naming rights to its new football stadium. Fresno St. makes $1.74 million/year on the right to its basketball arena. SDS makes $690,000/year on the rights to its basketball arena.

And so we see the difference between the MWC haves and the MWC have-nots. In seeing the revenue disparity it amazes me that we are competitive in the MWC in basketball and football. I doubt there is a school in all FBS that wrings more out of its limited athletic budget than USU. Thank goodness for Sen. Hillyard and student fees.

All them cities are far bigger than Logan. I'm sure that played into negotiations for naming rights. To me that would be a pretty big factor on what naming-rights is worth for an arena.

This. And Boise State isn’t just financially backed by a bigger city, they run the entire state of Idaho. They have zero competition with Idaho and ISU. And never underestimate the far reaching roots of their trucker degree.

Hosting the NCAA Tournaments helps make the naming rights appealing as well.

So all we need is an international airport and a new basketball stadium?

I don’t disagree with any of these comments. Bigger city; only game in town; hosting NCAA basketball tourneys; greater attendance; national brand; history of on-the-field success — and the list goes on. Nor do I fault USU’s administration for not being able to negotiate a better naming rights deal. The economics are what they are. It’s analogous to our lack of state-wide media coverage or our inability to buy much Aggie gear outside of Cache Valley. We are simply too small of a fish to merit anyone’s significant attention or investment. It’s just disheartening.

Unless something changes I don’t see how we can continue successfully fighting above our weight class.

Another 5 years of success with NCAA tourney wins, conf champs, bowl wins, some p5 road wins, a few p5 home games.... still baby steps.

The problem is can USU be successful with what we have for another 5 years ? I would think that Hartwell, and Smith would be very attractive to other schools given what they have done with less.

BSU got that money for a existing basketball arena, with a on the floor product that is not as good as what USU has most of the time. Football drives the Bus. If we sell out season tickets for football in our 25,000 stadium then the path will get much better.

I'm always amazed and proud of what USU manages to pull off in ALL areas: academics, research, sports, etc. It has always seemed to be able to do more with less.

True. Now we need to do more with more.

I know others have brought this up, but the reality is that we are a distant third place in the state in fan base, and based in the 14th largest city in the state behind a whole bunch of Wasatch front cities. There are almost no events that take place in our facilities other than USU athletic events. The fact that we get any corporate naming money for our football stadium is pretty good.

Nevada had no naming rights deal. Neither does Wyoming, UNLV, Hawaii, etc.
