Let’s hope the coaching staff reads this board then and actually rethinks their dumb position.

If all us know nothings on here can see the gaping hole as wide as the Grand Canyon, it’s amazing they refuse to.

I would hope the coaching staff does not spend a lot of time reading this board, after all we know so much more than they do regarding what they want who they can get, how he would fit in.

What's amazing to me is how many of you don't want to trust a coaching staff that lost 7 damn games last season with a team that was projected to finish ninth.

Or a 1,000 more from me saying that the coaching staff isn't going to be bringing in a point guard that will play immediately.
I know you are right '22, but what about bringing in a young kids that can play next year when we lose everyone that can handle the basketball?

This. The coaching staff will fill the last scholie with a guard but it'll be a freshman or a transfer that has to sit out.

Well Steven Ashworth is scheduled to be back after this upcoming season. Still need another point guard though.

We are down to 998.

Here's why. I don't think coaches are pefect. I don't think every decision they make is absolutely 100% correct. Coaches are fallible. They make mistakes. They miss on some players. They sign guys like Fakira and Ainge when they are clearly not D1 MW level players.

That's ok. Smith is awesome. I'm so glad he's the coach. I hope he coaches here a long time. He's gonna get things right most of the time. I don't think he's perfect and I think he's wrong on not bringing in a high impact PG for next year. I think he's missing a big opportunity to strike while the iron is hot with Merrill and Queta before they are gone.

Hope that answers your question.

I personally like the idea of signing a freshman PG more than a sit out transfer. Can plan on redshirting him, but will have another body if the injury bug strikes.

The only indication I have that Smith and staff aren't seriously looking for a JC or grad transfer PG is what others have alluded to on this forum. If a serious upgrade at PG becomes available or is "discovered" by our staff and they believe the player would be a good fit, I'm confident they will recruit him.

While I agree with the devils advocates on PG being a concern, I feel this coaching staff can scheme around it. I feel they see some potential in Porter continuing to improve. They would know better than any of us. There is a level of trust from fan to coach on that one. With Smith only here for a year it's hard for some to trust at this point. That's isn't unreasonable at all till Smith has a longer track record. With that being said it's also not unreasonable to think that we are poised to still match or do better than last year. I really do like the young guys Smith have coming in. Smith will have the pieces in the right places before the year starts. I have no doubt in that.

G McChesney

I believe we will be better next year regardless of the use of the 13th scholly but I hope we get lucky and hit a home run with it.

If Grootfaam and Stall are both good to go and can stay healthy, I think McChesney may redshirt. My opinion is based more on giving him another year to bulk up rather than his abilities.

If the staff brings in another freshman guard, he would be another redshirt candidate. If the staff brings in a JC or grad transfer guard, then maybe Bairstow would redshirt. :noidea:

Another (very speculative and unlikely scenario) is if Bairstow is a super freshman who warrants 30 minutes/game, we could redshirt Miller since Merrill and Bairstow would be taking the bulk of the minutes.

If Stall is able to stay healthy then it’s a battle for Queta’s back up with Kuba. Loser only plays in garage time.
Grootfaam and Bean are similar in philosophy. Both are relentless rebounders and hustle on defense. Their scoring is mainly putbacks and on dump offs from a penetrating guard. I never saw Grootfaam shoot from farther out than 4-6 feet. If Groot is healthy then I don’t see many minutes hear from McChesney. I think we’ll see Queta stretching the floor and letting either of these two players do the dirty work inside often. If Queta wants to play in the NBA he’ll need to showcase that he can hit from outside consistently.

I also think we’ll see Merrill play more “point” because he needs to showcase this for the next level.

The moment McChesney sets foot on campus in 3 weeks he will be the second best shooter on the team. That alone will get him playing time.

It's not wrong to see a hole and wonder why we aren't filling it. Coach Smith nailed 1 recruit last year. Remind me again how the Summit League kids did last year and how much they are going to contribute this year?

JK3 made us better as a team. He would have contributed meaningfully this year too if it weren’t for academics (from what has been said on this board). TK was a true freshman and the second best pg on the team. I think a year or two would’ve turned him into a good pg.

The academic struggles for JK3 were very real. He would have been academically ineligible for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

As with most true freshman, he will need to get stronger but all our new players will be in town June 17th to go through the 8-week strength and conditioning program.

I don't want Smith to redshirt anyone. I don't see an advantage to doing that.

If someone's good enough to help us win games, I want them playing. If someone's not good enough to help win games, I want the staff to recruit a replacement.
