Horrible, horrible video streaming

Post by Bank Shot » November 15th, 2019, 9:16 pm

I stated this in chat, but for a nationally ranked team coming off an historic year, the current situation is embarrassing. It's really hard for people that don't live locally to get excited about this team when you just get frustrated trying to keep up.

It's 2019 for crying out loud!!!

The problem is the videography is farmed out to a podunk local company named Cis-Com. I'm sure it's some kind of buddy-buddy deal. Much of the equipment appears to be hand-me downs from the 90s.

Felt like I was in a time warp the entire game. I think I probably missed about half of the game just from pauses, skips, and having to refresh it.

The difference from the Montana State game (Produced by AT&T SportsNet) to the next three (Cis-com) has been night and day. Extremely frustrating trying to follow the game with buffering and video loops of the same 15 second segments over and over until you refresh the feed is maddening. Seems like every time the video buffering finally resolves itself the quality is so bad it just looks like a bunch of blocks and blobs running around.

My feed worked flawlessly when the camera was on the opposite end of where the action was for one possession.

For those who want to help get this fixed, I recommend contacting the Athletics Department and letting them know that there is a problem. They likely all attend the games themselves and have no clue that the streams are this bad.

I was getting frustrated with live stats and live feed. It is weird because it is been a problem after the 1st game.

To be fair, I enjoy being able to watch games at all. But everything said above is absolutely true.

It is an absolute joke. The streams we had 2004 were much better than this season. Embarrassing!

Fortunately, we only have three more games this season on the MW Network (UTSA and the two NAIA games).

I don’t remember the quality being this bad last year with the Stadium Roku app. I don’t know why they abandoned the app.

I see the mods changed the title of my original post and deleted some content, which I'm cool with. I understand. But can you imagine the frustration of current player's parents that live away trying to keep up with their son's career? And if this carries over to other sports like vollyball, soccer, softball, etc. then it just amplifies an embarrassing situation for a Division 1 University.

ESPN is as bad. I found their handling of college basketball live stats a joke.

ESPN relies on schools to pass them the live stats. If the school doesn't pass it, they can't do anything. ESPN video streaming is excellent and what we've seen the last 3 games isn't even in the same galaxy as ESPN streaming.

Literally, I feel like a kid with a webcam and laptop with a hotspot could give us better streaming.

In reality, the Big Sky has a better streaming deal. They are all on Pluto and the quality is better than the MW. Regualar networks like ATTSN are better than Pluto but for streaming, not bad.

The MW streaming is put on by the USU video department. They are in charge of streaming girls soccer, volleyball, softball etc. The cameras are cis-com but their primary use is for the in game jumbo-iron, replays and review. Streaming just taps into cis-com. Also as of note, the guy in charge of streaming was gone due toa death in the family tonight and a new guy was in-charge. I work for usu athletics as student so that's why I know this.

Condolences to the guy in charge of streaming. Seriously.

However, these issues were present for the last two games as well. The only difference tonight was we also had problems with the audio with the color guy being way too loud every time he talked.

The soccer and volleyball games are better productions with higher quality cameras from what I have seen. And I don't get the buffering.

Also, the scoreboard spanning the entire horizon on the top of the screen is very hard to read. The scores on either side of the teams names and right next to the clock and shot clock. Extremely hard to tell who's winning. You have to look across the whole screen left to right and try to figure out which numbers to go which team and which are the clock.

Mine was bad enough last night that I turned off the game. If a fan of the team, who watches +95% of the games, turns off the game because the streaming is cutting out and pausing so much, no way you get a casual fan to stick around. It's a problem for sure.

At one point during the Weber game the audio was over 20 seconds behind the video.

I was extremely close to shutting it off too. About half of the game was lost to me. Have to be pretty excited about the team to endure that frustration every week and keep watching.

I turned it off too, and watched the ESPN game tracker. Seriously, the no video game tracker was easier to follow.

It's not looking promising at this point. The game hasn't been archived yet which is where Videobot get's them from.

Don't consider it fixed until we see the St Katherine's game. Tonight was produced by a completely different group.

Agreed. The Facebook feeds have been heads and shoulders better than the MW broadcasts. It's not even close.
