Awesome. He can move extremly well for a big guy. Hope he is playing tougher competition now. The way he moves reminds me of a poor man's Zion. That's a compliment, no body moves like Zion.

22, does this mean we are no longer recruiting the other guy you couldn't tell us about? Who is he? I guess if Stall and/or Grootfam move on then there is a spot for him. We still need another wing though.
Actually, I think we need a point guard, Able P. Will be moving on. I’m pretty sure Ashworth will not be ready for prime time just yet.
Our other primary ball handlers (Merrill/Brito) will also be gone. I'm not very confident that Ashworth/Worster/Bairstow/Anthony will be the right solution for next season's PG duties. Getting an experienced PG (transfer or JC) that is eligible to play in 20/21 would be a good addition.

I believe Nigel is at a prep school now.

Its good to hear the staff is out recruiting. Looks like he committed to Washington State last year but decommitted in March.

Why does it always look like our big recruits are playing against the deacons quorum in their highlight videos?

It legitimately looks like he is playing against 5th graders. I'm not sure I've ever really knew what men among boys was until I've seen this.

This guy is going to be exciting. The intensity level seems so clear to me. Hopefully it sticks when he is playing against guys his own size. But there aren't many bigs that will be able to bang the boards with him

No one has looked like he was playing against 5th graders like Modou Niang. He probably WAS playing against 5th graders. He was our original aircraft carrier.

Please let us know when we have your permission to be erected. ;)

This is actually a pet peeve of mine in HS athletics.

HS Athletics are designed to "win the game"- and coaches tend to not give 2 craps about the future of their players. They'll have a perfectly good 6'3" kid who could be a beast guard- play Center because he is literally the tallest player on the team. Instead of trying to find a tall kid at the school and develop them through Freshman and JV basketball into a solid varsity player. Although basketball wasn't/isn't my sport, I would suspect that there is a reason a lot of the college recruiting goes through AAU teams. What's a shame is that there are probably kids who would actually have a future in basketball- and could at least get college paid for if their coaches were concerned about it.

It hurts all of the kids development- because when you do have a 6'9" kid who is supposed to guard him, your 6'1" PF?

I could see that coming a mile away. Smith and co. have no clue and we should turn recruiting over to the board.

Help me out here. I have seen a similar comment a couple of times. But I guess I have not been paying attention. Porter is a Junior this year. Why is it that we don’t expect him to return to USU for his Senior season? Thanks.
I actually know this! He graduates this year and doesn't plan on pursuing basketball professionally so he is thinking he will move on with his life, which is understandable!
Graduates with his Master's degree. I mean, he's already going to wrap up grad school... I'd be hard pressed to stick around any longer if I were him.

If you have 3 guys(Ashworth/Worster/Bairstow) already to play the point why would you recruit a 4th?

Ashworth - Another version of C. Ainge
Worster - inexperienced freshman combo guard
Bairstow - How many minutes has he played this year? How many assists does he have, compared to turnovers?
(There is no Rylan Jones in this group)

I disagree with the crew ainge comparison. He was much better in hs than ainge.

PG-obsessed fans need to understand, Smith isn't interested in 5'10" fast players who dribble 15 seconds every shot clock. He wants four 6'5" to 6'8" guys on the floor who can all handle, pass, and shoot. He wants the ball moving. He wants everyone sharing. He wants everyone to be a threat to drive, pass, or shoot.
If you must have a traditional PG to be happy, you may want a different coach.

IMO this is quite a bit off. Ashworth is a completely different player than Crew. He's a much better player and a better shooter.

Honestly, I don't feel like we've been hurt by our current pg situation. Our ball movement is fantastic and has really helped us to score points. Porter is also a pretty good three point shooter, that's much more valuable in this offense than a "typical" pg.

Did you watch the New Mexico game in the MWC tournament last year? Or the Washington game in the NCAA tournament last year?

Also, Abel is shooting 27% from the 3 point line so far this year.

False equivalence/faulty comparison.

The desire to upgrade our "PG/break-the-press/distributor/3P-threat/solid perimeter defender" position does not mean people want a "5'10" fast player who dribble[s] 15 seconds every shot clock." Literally no one on this board has suggested USU should recruit the player you describe.

As reflected in my post entitled "USU Stats Through 6 Games," USU's production has suffered when Porter has been on the court. His turnover numbers are atrocious, and he lags behind his teammates in nearly every other advanced statistic that measures efficiency, production, and contribution to wins. As I noted in that post, I do believe Porter played much better during the conference portion of the schedule last season so perhaps he will turn things around, but so far this season he has been more a liability than an asset.

Porter not playing well =/= need for a traditional PG. It means we need improved play from one of the four dribble, pass, shoot players.

Right, you all want us to recruit Ben Simmons (eyeroll).

I have taken the generalization that we need a PG and focused it to the traditional profile of the USU PG. Regardless of the size of the player, it's clear that Smith isn't interested in one guy dominating the ball. When 22 says we won't be focused on recruiting a PG for two off-seasons in a row, those calling for it need to realize that Smith isn't focused on recruiting a PG because he's not interested in the concept of a PG.

Are you asking for assistance with parsing my sentence?

Consider this - we have no PG, we have four players who dribble, pass, and shoot. Porter is one of those four. If he's not playing well, it doesn't mean we need a PG, it means we need improved play - either from him, or his replacement (i.e. one of the four - with he or his replacement being the one).

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU

Post by Imakeitrain » November 26th, 2019, 9:13 am

Just from a vague look at the top recruits (so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong-)

The trend appears to be that players are going in as "combo guards". There doesn't seem to even be that much in terms of "elite level" PGs.

I'm wondering if part of the reason we aren't seeing PG recruits, is simply that they aren't being called PGs but instead are being called "Combo Guards".

Either way, Smith seems to know what he's doing. I cannot argue with his results. 7-0 baaaaybeee!!!

In other words, we need better PG play.
Nope, we don't have a PG - and Smith isn't interested in having one. That's why he isn't focused on recruiting one for two straight recruiting seasons.

New Mexico’s press is gonna be awesome without a pg.

The established positions of basketball have changed and there's really only guards and forwards now. Within that there's abilities like shooting, ballhandling, passing, etc. Needing a traditional 'point guard' doesn't really apply anymore. The great 'point guards' in the NBA are really just scoring guards that have some decent handles and passing abilities if needed.

Having a player out there who can only handle the ball/pass and do little else is pointless.

If we have good guards that can handle the ball and work together to bring the ball up with pressure, then I don't care if we have a PG. The last two years, we have been pretty good against pressure bringing the ball up and have not turned the ball over much on the opponents side of mid court. Merrill, Porter, and Brito have been very good bringing the ball up. Even against Washington, it was mainly steals and sloppy passes that doomed us. I trust Smith to get the right people that fit his system well. I would like to see at least one guard that is fast and shifty to help bring the ball up, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has to be a PG. If Worster, Anthony, Bairstow, or someone else can fill that void then I say recruit the best players we can get no matter what position.

You’re describing things a PG does and things we need, but you’re just not calling him a PG.

In that case, you’re right, we don’t need a pg. we just need someone that can dribble well, make good passes, is quick, fast and shifty, makes good decisions with the ball, and doesn’t make sloppy passes.

We lose Porter, Merrill and Brito......and smith still isn’t gonna bring in a player (I won’t say PG) that does all the things mentioned above. (That isn’t a freshman)
