Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
What is the goal of the beehive classic? What is the environment like? Do students get special pricing for tickets? I feel like playing in-state rivals on a campus is a lot better atmosphere than in vivant arena... because I doubt that place gets packed and rowdy. I am an out of stater though so that's why im asking. Thoughts?

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
I thought it would be a good thing to get a instate game in SLC which would allow alum's to stay connected to the school, but I was wrong as alums seem to not care, even for a game with Utah or BYU. most do not like it.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
The goal of the beehive classic is to allow Utah to play us once every three years in their backyard without having to return a game in our backyard. For BYU the goal is to avoid the spectrum every other year and make it just once every three years. For Utah State and Weber this tournament is not a good thing.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
The first time USU played BYU at Vivint the atmosphere was great. It was really well done. Each year it has gradually gotten worse though. Even last year the crowd for the BYU/Utah game was mediocre at best. It's always fun to see the Aggies play but as far as being a great atmosphere goes? It's not. This will be the last year of the Classic and hopefully the last year of USU playing in state teams at Vivint.
As for student sections, they typically allow the students to have discount tickets directly behind the baskets but those sections appear to be for sale this year. Not sure what the are doing. The schools seem to be more hands off this year. Each school used to get an allotment of tickets but the Jazz are handling all ticket sales this year.

I think for USU it puts a game on the schedule with a decent opponent, most years, that's it. Helps fill the schedule. I would be happy never playing those two douche schools ever. Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
Does Utah need to play us at all ? As I recall they dropped us and Weber completely some time ago. I think a home and home and neutral with BYU seems fair. Why do not aggie alums in SLC not go to watch a game with BYU in SLC ?stewusu98 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 3:09 pmThe goal of the beehive classic is to allow Utah to play us once every three years in their backyard without having to return a game in our backyard. I'd like to play them both, every year. Let them come up to the Spectrum. Better than getting blown out by Coastal Carolina. At least we're a reputable team.Aggie19 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 3:18 pmI think for USU it puts a game on the schedule with a decent opponent, most years, that's it. Helps fill the schedule. Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
No. And we don't need to play them. Should they play us and should we play them? Absolutely, yes. For the fans and tradition. But the Utah A.D. and coach couldn't care less about that.
Correct. They killed a 100+ year rivalry when they moved to the PAC 12 after losing 7 straight games in Logan. They refuse to ever play in Logan again.
Fair? You could argue that. But college games should be played on college campuses when the two teams are within 2 hours driving distance of each other. Playing in a sterile NBA arena for no apparent reason except avoiding playing in tough home court advantages seems silly. BYU strong armed Stew into agreeing to the Delta Center games and by the end of his career he openly regretted it. At the time the Aggies were dominating the Cougars in Logan (had won 7 of the last 8 in Logan). Now? Not so much. Maybe they'll be more open to returning to Logan every other year now.
Laziness? Penny Pinching? Uninterested? TV Options are Available? Don't want to see a college game in an NBA arena? We may never know.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
So, I just bought 18 tickets and wanted to get them all together. Impossible to do online, by the way. So I called the Jazz arena and lo and behold, I spoke with an Aggie fan who is none other than Treesaps cousin (Hunter). After a frustrating experience trying to purchase tickets for over an hour, I had the best experience. If anyone wants to buy tickets and have a great experience and avoid the additional fees and such to this game or any Jazz game, let me know and I will message you his direct line.

I talked to Coach Smith, over the Summer, at the USU basketball camp and asked him about scheduling a game with Utah. He said that Utah refuses to play us. To further clarify, I asked him if Utah would play us if we offered to play them at the Huntsman Center for a WON and done. Coach Smith said that Utah will not play us period.Aggie19 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 3:28 pmI'd do home and home, no problem. I have not been the last 2 years but this year I got tickets I want to go support the Aggies and hopefully they can come home with the victory. I am not a fan of the Beehive classic but I hope people come out and support the Aggies this year this team deserves it but after this year I hope they do away with it.

I’m in the minority, but I like seeing where we stack up with in-state teams on a neutral floor.

I broke down and went again last year. I will not be back. Every. Sterile environment to say the least and these games used to be played in rocking environments.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
To answer the OP, no, it isn't very fun. Every bleeping one of those games should be played on a college campus. I've been every year for the sole reason that the Aggies are there. Hopefully this will be the last year of this idiocy.
Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
I have gone to them and am going this year. Just have very low expectations and you will be fine.
The Jamaica games looked like a better atmosphere than the Beehive Classic. Cool idea just needed to make it part of the season ticket or something.
Not sure why people didn’t go the first year but I understand people not going after that.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
If we can sustain success we should back out in the future. Right now we are #15. Although I'd love it, it may be hard to have this level of continued success. Unlike others I do think it'll be a couple of years before Coach Smith gets the right offer to leave. (Hopefully we start to proactively open our pocketbooks) Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens didn't leave their mid-major program right away. I dont think basketball is like football in that sense... but like football it's a business and we need to pay Coach Smith fairly to keep him.
Given that background, right now we are the blue chip team playing in the Beehive Classic. Not Utah. Not BYU. I mean sure Utah won a game by 90+ but then they immediately proceeded to lose to Coastal Carolina and Tulane.
If we keep Coach Smith next year and we are the premier team in the state still, I see no need to play a neutral site game against in-state opponents. Only ELITE out-of-state teams should play us in neutral site games and even then I'd rather schedule a 2-1 or even a 3-1 (because eventually we get big games at home every year) with a blue blood than Utah every 3rd year in SLC.

I think it's cool to have at least a game a year at Vivint for the many Wasatch Front Aggies - doesn't have to be in state teams - but I know a lot of people hate that idea of keeping a connection with the alumni.

Re: Is the Beehive Classic any fun?
I think one of the biggest factors in alumni not sporting this stupid event comes from the first time we played BYU there. Tickets were sold through the universities and only season ticket holders could buy them. I tried purchasing tickets and was not allowed to because I did not hold design tickets. I know several other Aggies on the wasatch front that were also denied tickets. They finally opened up sales a few days before the game but by then it was too late. It was an epic fail and another slap in the face of wasatch Aggies in what could have been a great opportunity to get them involved.
I emailed Spetman at the time and got a response that essential said they have to take care of their season ticket holders and donors.
Had they made a big effort to get wasatch Aggies involved in the beginning, this event might have grown as the fold in Logan lost interest in going to watch a game in Salt Lake.

For BYU the goal is to avoid the spectrum every other year and make it just once every three years. For Utah State and Weber this tournament is not a good thing.
