New Goals/New Focus

Post by scotlandog » January 4th, 2020, 11:44 pm

SDSU is a great team and UNLV is better than their record indicates. We lost both but I believe we are beating ourselves not the other way around.

Tonight we lost by 9 points. If we had only shot 33% from 3 and 80% from the charity stripe that would have 2 more 3’s made(rounding up) and 3 more free throws made(not counting the back end of the 1&1’s). That’s 9 points. That’s not asking for much to shoot 33% from 3 and 80% FTs.

We are still a good team but are in an extremely bad 3pt shooting funk. Miller, Brito, Merrill, Porter, Anderson. Everybody. At this point, we are not going to win the conference(I don’t see SDSU losing more than 2 games) and have probably lost any chance at a good seed even if we get an at large bid.

So, the only thing that matters now is getting things corrected. Fix our shooting woes. Get healthy. Give Sam some rest. Get Kuba back. Get Queta and Kuba some conditioning. Focus everything on making a run at the end of the season and trying to win the tournament. Avoid bad losses and shoot for an 11-12 seed.

I wonder if the pressure of the preseason hype has gotten into our heads and we are afraid to lose. Well, we’ve lost everything now. Let the hype go. Start playing free, playing loose. Get our heads out of the way and just play. This may be the silver lining to losing. We’ve hit rock bottom this week. Let’s pick ourselves up and get ourselves right. Let’s go Aggies!!!

Couple of thoughts:

1. That’s a good SDSU team. I think we lose to them 8 times out of 10. Capable interior play and exceptional guard play. They shot 50/45/85 tonight and out-rebounded us. They are not the best team in the nation, but they are very good.

2. Thought I would hate them a lot more than I did. They just came in and took care of business with out a lot of self promotion. A couple of their players were chatting it up as they were leaving the court, but it was players that did not even play in the game. Color me impressed with this teams demeanor.

3. WARNING-CAPTAIN OBVIOUS STATEMENT AHEAD. Sam needs some damn help. Zero confidence in our team offensive production. I also think the kids have zero confidence in their offensive production. We need someone to step it up now, or Sam is gonna have the living hell beat out of him every single night. Amazing he scored 26 tonight. Is Bairstow a huge liability on defense? We gotta find someone to help.

I’m wondering if we should give Sam 2 weeks off to get back to at least 90% for the stretch run. What he’s got right now isn’t enough.

I still think this team can be a top-three seed in the conference. Sam's ankles look like they're just shot he has no lift whatsoever. I love the guy cuz he gives everything he has in his body to try and win the game. We need to shoot the ball better once shot start falling things will open up and will play a lot better. Queta played really well tonight I was super impressed with the way he was moving. That alone is going to help out Sam a lot cuz people have to start doubling down on him and he is a great passer. Once we can get our team 3-point percentage up to 37 or 38% we will be very tough to beat.

hmmm we keep saying we need to shoot better after every game. I think we are at the point where we are just bad shooters as NOBODY is improving.

Disagree. Same team that shot a lot better last year

Sam is shooting 40% on the year from 3, even with the current shooting slump. If he just shoots his average that is there 2 more 3’s I described in my original post. Also, pretty much every starter and player who played last night, shoots around or above 80% FTs. If we had just shot that 80% we would at least be tied at the end of the game last night.

I don’t think there’s been lots of complaints all season long about shooters other than Miller. Just recently we have been shooting poorly. To me, we do have good shooters, we are just in a slump as a team. This is also not related to the team we are playing. Our offense is providing many opportunities for wide open 3’s but we are not hitting those shots.

Sam is a one legged man in a butt kicking contest on the perimeter right now.

Earlier in the year Fonzo looked amazing when he was playing more of a 3 / stretch 4. When the injury happened to Kuba he has played way more 4 and now he has no confidence. I’d love to see him work back into the 3 role a little more and have Bairstow get more minutes at the 2.

In our offense right now there are few off ball screens. We saw Sam set one last night for a Queta dunk. We also don’t seem to have anyone that we can pick and roll/pop with and so that makes the in ball screens way less effective. Early in the year we were all over the place with movement and screens-it was such a thing of beauty.

Good thing we kept ‘Dribble’ in the playbook. Worked twice to perfection.
