Bairstow is improving.

Post by SLB » January 8th, 2020, 12:45 am

Bairstow is looking good and making plays. Bairstow looked more smooth than before with shooting and passing. Made defensive plays and improves on rebounding.
Bairstow made Merrill style draw a charge. :thanks:

If other players can't get out of their slumps, I think Bairstow should see more time and at least get a chance to show if he struggles or not. We already know Anderson, Brito, Miller and Porter are.

It’s a qualitative assessment, but he kinda reminds me of Andrei Kirilenko, was impressed with his hustle last night

I'd love to see more Bairstow on the court. Give him a good 30 minutes.

He had 2 sweet dimes in a row in like a 20 sec span...one to Queta and one to Anderson for a dunk. Was the spark for the big run we went on! His minutes keep increasing.

So far in this Nevada game in minutes for guards
18 Merrill
14 Bairstow
13 Miller
13 Brito
10 Porter
This is a big deal.

Bairstow is taking over.
Miller, Brito, and Porter were rotating around with Bairstow.

The one thing is that he did have 5 turnovers.

No doubt this is true, but Bairstow getting 23 minutes against Nevada is a big deal.

He also shooting 40% from 3 for the year. He passed up a lot of good looks tonight that came as part of the offense. Seems like he feels he can’t be the guy to tale the shot. If he can keep getting minutes like this he will continue to gain confidence and then he will let those shots fly. I do like that he looks to drive and attack the defense rather than shoot the 3 but he will get some good looks.

His defense tonight was the difference. His length really threw Nevada off. When he was out they got a lot more looks from the inside. He moved hood feet very well for a 6’8” guy.

Fed Queta all night long. He makes plays. Doesn't just camp the 3 and will DRIVE.

He made quiet a few mistakes but I think they were just rookie mistakes and will be worked out as he gets more minutes. I remember seeing smith get frustrated when Bairstow didn’t run the right play, but I was happy to see him leave him in after that. Bairstow has so much potential and I want to see his minutes increase!

Had Bairstow been getting more minutes in other games that didn’t matter, I think he would have worked some if his mistakes out. He has five turnovers, but didn’t get benched. That can be nothing but a good sign for us going forward. His defensive contribution weighed the turnovers he committed. Once he gains the confidence to shoot a little more he is going to be lethal.

I was glad to see us run an offense. It felt like during the losing streak we made no attempt to work the ball around from the inside out. Things sure opened up last night and it felt like Bairstow played a role in putting forth the effort to play team ball.

Yes it was awesome to see them actually run some plays, set picks for each other and roll to the basket. Biggest stat was 20 assists. If you get assists just like that most nights you will probably win.

He seemed like he overplayed a bit on defense to me. At least out on the perimeter against their more attic players looking to drive in. I could be reading that wrong as I don't have the best analytical eye for basketball. Are there any advanced stats that would show a weakness in allowing players to blow past him?

Of course, even of I'm right I would chalk it up to over eagerness and lack of experience. He may just need to learn how to position himself better and get more experience guarding players that will drive on him.

We don't have the most athletic players in the world, so they're gonna get blown by I'm certain matchups. I think they were allowing that last night because we were more concerned with keeping them off the three point line, and relying on Queta to clean up or deter drives to the basket. For the most part, it worked, as Jazz and Drew both had subpar games. The mistakes I saw in his game were turnovers and passing up some shots that he should have taken. These are, IMO, freshman mistakes, and he'll be coached out of them. We've got some intriguing talent going forward.

I don't have the best analytical eye for basketball either, but I do remember watching one play where Bairstow gave the guy some space on the 3 point line and he drained a 3 on him.

That one clip of Sean hitting the open 3 was just a possession or two after he passed up a wide open look from the corner in which Coach Smith was seen talking to him about it. Good sign that Sean didn’t hesitate the next time he got a look.

In tonight's Coaches Show, Coach Smith commented on Bairstow getting more time vs. Nevada and said that this trend will continue. He also commented that the players really believe in him and like seeing him out there.

For those interested, here's audio to the show:

My two biggest take-aways from the Nevada game:

1. Bairstow's confidence and play have improved significantly -- though he ended up with five turnovers (unacceptable), he had fewer moments where he seemed over-matched and out-of-control. He made his shots (1-1 3PA, 2-3 2PA), grabbed a couple rebounds (could use more from him here - 2 boards in 23 minutes isn't great for a 6'8" guy - even if he's a perimeter player), and dished out three assists (but need to limit the TOs). I definitely could see him playing a larger role -- particularly if Brito and Miller do not step it up.

2. How did Zane Meeks NOT end up at BYU-P? He may have the most BYU-P haircut I have ever seen.

It will come with just getting a year or two older and collegiate weight training, but Bairstow probably needs to put on about 20 pounds.

If Bairstow is going to be playing PG, I don't want him putting on 20 pounds.

I think something that hasn't been mentioned is the minutes that Bairstow is taking away from other players. Of course he is taking a few mins from Miller, Brito, Porter. But lately he has probably been taking more minutes away from Anderson and Bean (4 guards, 1 center).
