Show me one place that has Flynn going first round?!SDSU wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 5:10 amwhat's with people being out of touch with reality? Merril is too slow, and unathletic and slightly undersized for his position in the NBA. i'm not trying to "troll" or anything, but at the same time, i have to be honest.
The skill gap between Flynn and Merrill is vastly different. Flynn is a projected late 1st rounder and merrill (is a solid ncaa player, he simply does not have what the NBA usually goes for)

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
Yeah, I have to admire Merrill's religious convictions, but NBA teams rarely draft 24-year-old players. If he hadn't gone on a mission, I think there is a good chance he would be picked up in the second round somewhere. But at his age, UFA is probably the best-case scenario. But assuming he doesn't make it in the NBA, I am sure he will have a nice career in Europe. Jaycee Carroll probably earned a lot more in his European career than many (most?) NBA second-round picks.

You left out too old. And those were all things they said (and still say) about Joe Ingles.SDSU wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 5:10 amwhat's with people being out of touch with reality? Flynn is projected as a late 2nd rounder, he's too short. He's the next Trey Burke (if he's lucky).

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
Two very smart guys, Sam Vecenie and John Hollinger, both think there's a chance. There's more discussion in that thread suggesting he's a two-way contract guy if he doesn't get drafted.

Well I looked at their last article and it is from 2017. I don't think they update anything except for the rankings...brownjeans wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 4:02 pmThat's the logo they're going to use for USU? Seriously?

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
Guys, we have been over this. Merrill is a great player. One of the best we have seen at Utah State. He will make a ton of money playing basketball.
But.....
He simply does not have the physical tools that NBA teams typically look for. He isn't especially athletic, he doesn't have great size, he isn't very quick, he has no vertical leap to speak of, etc...

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
Much is said about Sam's weaknesses but not enough is said about his ability to defend, play physical, and not just shoot, but approach Damian Lillard territory. Those things make him a little different than the unathletic 6'5" 2-guard profile. And we haven't started to talk about his dogged determination. Anybody remember Darwin Thompson? Unrecruited, and at 5'8", it might have been easy to dismiss his fixation on making it to the NFL and now he has a ring.

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
Let's be honest, the biggest thing holding him back is that he's white and American. If he were from Serbia he'd be a late first-round pick. For example, he reminds me ALOT of Bogdan Bogdanovic, a MAJOR contributor for the Sacramento Kings.
Watch this highlight film and you can see it:
or
Both 6'5" lights out 3pt shooters who generally shoot better in rhythm than from spotting up. Average athleticism (at best) but highly skilled. Both can break the defender down off the dribble, get to the hoop, finish in traffic and draw fouls. Can play either guard positions (the Kings often use Bogdanovic as their back up point guard). Both are scrappy defenders, great free-throw shooters, have great vision when running the point and are good ball handlers/movers.
For Sam, I could see him eventually in an NBA team's three-guard rotation, based on his skill, shooting ability, toughness, versatility and court vision. Obviously he needs to keep working on developing his body and get a few lucky breaks along the way.

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
If Sam’s wingspan was 6’11”, regardless of nationality, he would be a late first round pick.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑March 9th, 2020, 6:07 pmLet's be honest, the biggest thing holding him back is that he's white and American. If he were from Serbia he'd be a late first-round pick.

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
His age isn't doing him any favors either. The NBA draft really looks down its nose at anyone over 21. Still, there are a lot players in the league who were older when they got into the league and continue to get better.

Re: Sam Merrill's draft potential?
I have no idea about NBA draft potential. But I REALLY like his college tournament potential.
And he was clearly the best player on the court for all three MWC tournament games, regardless of any other player's draft potential.
Micah Finn is a good player too. He definitely had an off night. I'd like to think it was due to Merrill guarding him.
