The Shot - No call

Post by FireAg » March 8th, 2020, 4:23 pm

It looked, both in real time and in the numerous replays including slo-mo, that Sam was right - he was fouled on THE SHOT. Feagin slapped him on the wrist right as he let it fly.

It's possible that without the wrist slap, THE SHOT might have missed, so, of course, I'm real glad that it worked out the way it did. It was an amazing game and the biggest play in Aggies basketball history. It is much more delicious to beat these guys the way we did rather than foul shots.

I'm a little bugged that the official sat on his whistle when the wrist slap was obvious. I do understand the desire to let the players decide it during play rather than at the foul line in that situation. He would have had to make the call while the ball was in the air before he knew it was a make and the SDSU crowd would have let him have it. But it WAS a foul and should have been called. And we win by 4.

It almost really mattered when that Flynn shot almost went in.

That shot reminded me of the Butler-Duke game from like seven years ago or so when Gordon Hayward almost hit that half court shot to beat Duke...

For sure that was a foul on Sam but the one that really made me mad was the out-of-bounds call they called on queta. There is absolutely no excuse for that.

There was a lot of strange calls that went against us. Merrill, Queta, and Porter had calls against them that were beyond bad. On our scoreless stretch, Merrill shoot a layup and made it that was waved off from a non-shooting Aztec foul on the layup. :headscratch:

It mattered beyond whether Flynn's shot went in or not. What if Merrill missed his shot? It wasn't just hitting his wrist during the shot, he continued to move into Merrill after the shot to the extent it put him on the floor. Easy call. I don't buy " just let them play" not on something like that. If there was a foul you call it.

Not only did his arm get hit, but Sam had no landing zone. He got completely ran over. Queta being called out of bounds and the no call on “The Shot” was absolutely ridiculous.

I'm betting if that shot doesn't go in they call the foul.

This post is likely straight up poor sarcasm and cannot be taken seriously.

This. If they can allow the “players to make the play” they will but after it misses they would call the foul I think. Clear foul though.

Well he didn’t miss it so I’m saying if Flynn hits than shot and they don’t call it then the “well he made it anyway” isn’t much consolation

It was a foul but one that is inconsistent in how it is called. Especially that far away from the basket. The out of bounds call on Queta was atrocious. The missed call on Sam not so much.

This picture is a little cleaner.

Also another angle on The Shot.

Love the expression on Sam's face. Cool, calm, confident. Such a legend.

Porter got called for not giving a landing zone on the SDSU shooter. Porter did not even hit his wrist where Feagin hit his wrist, but also did not give a landing zone for Merrill.

Tonight I tried "the shot" at a gym. I also call it "the Sam Merrill." Dribble through legs left to right, cross over back left, through legs left to right, cross over back left, through legs left to right, through legs right to left, dribble and step left, dribble step left, rise up and fade a bit left and falling away ever so slightly and....brick. I couldn't get it to go down after multiple attempts. Everyone knew who I was trying to mimic.

Expecting a foul call on that shot was asking for too much. We should count ourselves lucky Merrill didn't get called for stepping out of bounds.

Larry Spaulding really dropped the whistle on that one.
