Walk on or scholly? I didn’t see anything in the article saying either way. Maybe 22 knows?

Looks like a solid pickup. Not sure what kind of competition he was playing against, but put up good numbers, did well in track, and seems like a great student.

Karson just told me he is a preferred walk-on.

Unless someone else were to unexpectedly choose to leave, this is the final addition to the 2020-21 team. 12 scholarship dudes and 3 walk-ons.

I like this signing. Two sport star (track and basketball) shows athleticism. He has his "stuff" together academically, as well, it would seem.

Averaging 20 points and 5 assists in high school is quite rare. 45% from three is exactly what we need here. And look at the range of those threes on his highlight tape - they are not "gimmies".

Good job by the recruiters and welcome to USU, Karson. The Karson with a "K" will fit in nicely in the state.

Seems like a good pickup. Scoring 2000 points in high school as well as 500 assists is pretty impressive. Looks like his high school is on the outer suburbs of Dallas/Fort Worth so the competition was probably solid. Shooting 45% from 3 is awesome. Seems like someone who will be able to find himself a role with the program. Also seems to have his stuff together off the court with all his academic and community service. Welcome Karson.

Looks about right. I'm smelling redshirt for '20-21, too. Kid needs to hulk up a bit. Nice stroke, though.

You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Another plus is that his dad is a basketball coach. That turned out good with JayCee.

22 delivers again. Any other schools we were competing against?

Reminds me of Tahlik Chavez a bit coming out of hs. Heck of a scorer and shooter out of the Dallas not a lot of interest for whatever reason. Chavez does one year of jc ball and then has all sorts of opportunities.

I just got done interviewing Karson and I'll have it published shortly. He was being heavily recruited by Midwestern State University, Southeastern Oklahoma, and Southern Idaho.

I'm just wondering how hard we are recruiting in-state athletes. It would sure be nice to sign a couple of players from the state of Utah.

We do have Steven Ashworth, Brock Miller, Trevin Dorius, and Matthew Wickizer.
Landon Brenchley joins the team next year.
I believe that we offered a number of players from Utah that went elsewhere.

The attempt is made to recruit in-state kids but when a kid has his mind made up or has other influences (family, friends, etc.) tugging him in another direction, it can be tough to change. The goal is to win and the coaching staff isn't going to settle for a lesser talented in-state kid just to appease the fan base.

If he’s in deed a preferred walk-on we were likely not competing against D1 schools for his services. At first blush he does not appear to be a game changer. I hope I’m wrong and that we win the walk-on lottery. We’ve done so before.

I am seriously impressed with Smith's recruiting, and excited to see how this new team competes. That is, IF we actually have a season.

Interesting. Really ugly shot and does not have a quick release, but those percentages are definitely nothing to sneeze at. Seems to put the ball well in front of him, push his butt back and shot put it up there. If he can get it off and shoot anywhere near the percentages he shot in high school, just let him shoot it however he wants.

I wonder if he will compete enough to get some playing time at some point.

Those were my thoughts about his shot as well Sap. Not to be a Debbie Downer but this looks like a kid we’re bringing in for practice who will likely transfer out in 1-2 years. Glad to have him and I’m not trying to knock on him. Seeing his list of options he’s making the right choice to come here a develop for a year before putting his name back out there. And we needed the depth. It’s a win-win. But I’ll change my avatar to Justin Bieber if he’s on the team 2 years from now.

Commenting for record.

Is it common to stick your butt out when you shoot from distance like him? He kinda pops it out and back in when he takes 3s. Is it just because he's scrawny?

This is pretty much how I've thought about the signing. Carson Bischoff had a beautiful shot with great percentages in JC on crazy volume but couldn't break into a pretty thin guard rotation (thin as in number of players not overall talent) on a team that was really struggling to shoot for most of the season. Would be surprised to see Karson get any notable minutes unless the rest of the incoming guards bomb hard.

2,000 points in a career is not too bad. I guess I am not looking at some of the things you guys were looking at in the highlights, and I didn't look at all of them, but there were several times where he took a pass above his head, and immediately went up with the 3. It didn't appear to me that it was a slow release. He also made some Sam Merrill-like drives to the basket.
Besides.....he looks a little bit like John Stockton with the dark hair and haircut. Only two star, but we have had some mighty fine players that were rated two stars. Name of the game is player development.

Yeah it is crazy just because Smith didn't recruit them, he wouldn't deserve serious credit. He deserves a ton of credit for the last two years. As good as Merrill is, he was on pace to be Jalen Moore before Smith got to Logan; a good player, but not a winner and a guy who didn't take "the next step." With Smith as coach he is player of the year and will go down as one of the greatest winners in Aggie history with 2 MW titles.

I certainly don't believe Duryea as coach gives us the results we saw the last two years. I don't believe many coaches would have given us those results.

Coach Smith deserves all the credit. 2 years ago it was the same team except for Queta. Smith brought hope and determination. As good as merrill was before smith he developed a lot more under smith. A lot of that is merrill, but without smith that for sure does not happen. If the 3 was not falling with duryea we were hosed because we had no back up plan. Coach smith instills confidence in his players.

Quick question about Stastny: is he LDS? Seems to fit the Bean/Quinn Taylor/Brad Brown/Matt Formisano mold of out-of-state walk-on late pickup, also not opposed to being on a campus with 6000 single Mormon girls.

It doesn't matter to me if he is or isn't. But this has been a helpful niche for USU in the past, and I wonder if it's intentional.

Based on our interview, I'm under the impression he is not. No mention of being LDS was made.

I was not saying that coach Smith shouldn't get credit for his coaching job. I was just saying he shouldn't get credit for recruiting good walk on talent yet because those 3 guys were not his recruits. Good coaching will only get you so far. I mean, the best coaching in the world wouldn't have helped Ainge much.

I don't see Stastny getting on the floor any time soon.

Unless someone else were to unexpectedly choose to leave, this is the final addition to the 2020-21 team. 12 scholarship dudes and 3 walk-ons.
I haven't been paying a lot of attention to BB recruiting lately. Does 12=13 now? Are we just saving the extra scholarship to give more flexibility in the future?

Unless someone else were to unexpectedly choose to leave, this is the final addition to the 2020-21 team. 12 scholarship dudes and 3 walk-ons.
I haven't been paying a lot of attention to BB recruiting lately. Does 12=13 now? Are we just saving the extra scholarship to give more flexibility in the future?
Since Minnesota took Both, we are giving them one of ours.

Haha! I guess in this case 12 does equal 13. The scholarship will be used for the 2021 class. I personally think it works out better this way. It saves us from adding a freshman and allows a little more balance between the classes.
