It also can be a motivating factor for a walk on knowing there is an open scholarship if they perform at a certain level.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 19th, 2020, 3:40 pmHaha! I guess in this case 12 does equal 13. The scholarship will be used for the 2021 class. I personally think it works out better this way. It saves us from adding a freshman and allows a little more balance between the classes.

Re: Roster is now filled out
I don't see us using any of the two remaining scholarships on a walk-on. These will be going to kids that are entering their senior year of high school. Technically, we have three open schollies BUT remember Cade Potter gets one of them.slcagg wrote: ↑June 19th, 2020, 3:53 pmIt also can be a motivating factor for a walk on knowing there is an open scholarship if they perform at a certain level.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 19th, 2020, 3:40 pmHaha! Re: Roster is now filled out
It seems like the best of both worlds would have been to use it on a grad transfer this year and then and still have the scholly available for next year. I guess the staff just couldn't find a grad transfer worth using the scholly on?

Re: Roster is now filled out
I'm going to say they couldn't find one that would play within the system.

Re: Roster is now filled out
Why did they spend all of their time recruiting players who wouldn’t play within the system?

Re: Roster is now filled out
I believe we were in early on a few but once P5 schools like Kentucky, Arizona, etc., got involved, it became tough to compete.

Re: Roster is now filled out
I can see this being the case every year. The 5-star McDonald's All-Americans from the P-5 schools play one or two years. These schools continue to get the top high school players then get the pick of the litter on the guys they missed out on the first time around but played well for a smaller school to fill out their rosters.
The smaller schools just sit back and hope their players don't get lured away and enter the portal and also hope the time and effort (and scholarship money) they invest into a recruit for two years pays off as upper classmen for about a 33% success rate.

Or you get P5 players who transfer to mid majors to get more playing time. Marco Anthony for example.

Re: Roster is now filled out
You are correct. I can think of three players in the last 20 or so years that USU has had transfer in from a P5 school.
The first was a local kid from Salt Lake - Braden Bell. A big man that transferred in from Ohio State and played much smaller than his size. He is most remembered around here for a three point shot attempt that went backward.... backward. He played sparingly and was gone after a season.
The next was another big - Jared Shaw, a transfer from Oklahoma State. He played for two seasons (I believe) at USU 5 or 6 yards ago. He really helped USU but was part of some mediocre teams. He was probably the best center USU had before Queta came along, at least in the last 30 years or so.
Anthony is number three. The jury is out on him. Reports are positive and I look for good things from him. We're 1 for 2 right now.
So yes, we do, on rare occasion, get a transfer from the P5 schools. We just don't get many. I think the trend is going to be transfer from P5 to P5 for the good players looking for playing time.
As I sit here and think about it, those may he the only P5 transfers into USU in the last 50 years. I would defer to the collective wisdom of USUFans.com to come up with other names for this list.

Todd Gentry transferred from byu. Depending on who you ask they're P5. Allegedly.
Jay Goodman transferred from Iowa State.

I could’ve profiled Todd Gentry as a BYU transfer.

Good call on Cupp Cormier. I can't believe I forgot him. I played some pickup games with him and most of the guys from that era when I was in school.aggies22 wrote: ↑June 20th, 2020, 5:56 pmCovington Cormier transferred from Uconn.Yossarian wrote: ↑June 20th, 2020, 5:27 pmYou are correct. Re: Roster is now filled out
Nevada has had a bunch over the years..Some worked out great, some not so great and some complete busts. The Pack has had more P5 players come into the program than they have lost to P5 programs.
Boise has quite few this year. NM gets their share too..It doesn't always work but the MW is an attractive landing spot for guys stepping down from P5.

Jerome Johnson came to USU from Oklahoma - billed as (College HoFamer) Wayman Tisdale's backup.
Not a huge contributor, but solid if I recall. He played in the famous 3OT game against UNLV.

Unfortunately, USU has that disadvantage expressed so eloquently by Derrick Harper when he was being courted by the Jazznvspuds wrote: ↑June 20th, 2020, 6:55 pmNevada has had a bunch over the years..Some worked out great, some not so great and some complete busts. "You go play in Utah!"
The MWC, as a conference, has had goid luck P5 transfers. USU - not so much.
On the flip side, the Aggies have not lost many players to the P5 conferences. David Collette transferring to Utah comes immediately to mind. There aren't many others that I recall. Maybe we just get a bunch of guys that are either loyal or that nobody else wants?

There is that one guy who claimed he would be the best Aggie ever, but left for Marquette.

I think we get guys that really want to be here. Both football and basketball. If that's loyalty, then great. I think the guys that are brought in just legitimately want to be here.Yossarian wrote: ↑June 20th, 2020, 7:47 pmUnfortunately, USU has that disadvantage expressed so eloquently by Derrick Harper when he was being courted by the Jazznvspuds wrote: ↑June 20th, 2020, 6:55 pmNevada has had a bunch over the years..Some worked out great, some not so great and some complete busts. I am now praying for the kid's success.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑June 12th, 2020, 9:26 pmThose were my thoughts about his shot as well Sap. Not to be a Debbie Downer but this looks like a kid we’re bringing in for practice who will likely transfer out in 1-2 years. Glad to have him and I’m not trying to knock on him. Seeing his list of options he’s making the right choice to come here a develop for a year before putting his name back out there. And we needed the depth. It’s a win-win. But I’ll change my avatar to Justin Bieber if he’s on the team 2 years from now.treesap32 wrote: ↑June 12th, 2020, 9:08 pmInteresting. Really ugly shot and does not have a quick release, but those percentages are definitely nothing to sneeze at. Seems to put the ball well in front of him, push his butt back and shot put it up there. If he can get it off and shoot anywhere near the percentages he shot in high school, just let him shoot it however he wants.
I wonder if he will compete enough to get some playing time at some point.

I agree with Sap and Hipster that his shooting motion needs some work. He does just kind of fling it up there and hope it goes in, lol. I’m glad to see he shoots a high percentage.LKGates wrote: ↑June 21st, 2020, 12:30 amI am now praying for the kid's success.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑June 12th, 2020, 9:26 pmThose were my thoughts about his shot as well Sap. The good news is that he has a great last name. Translated from Czech “šťastný” means “happy.“ Looking forward to seeing this kid play.
