Our first game of the season
Wichita State in the Bad Boy Mowers
https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/w ... 98730.html
WSU had a busy offseason since the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly ended its season last March when the Shockers were 23-8 and on the brink of a potential return to the NCAA Tournament. Since then, six players — nearly half of last season’s production — transferred out of the program and Marshall and his staff reloaded with a recruiting class they are confident will make the Shockers just as competitive as they were last season.
In his assessment of the returners, Marshall had high praise for the team’s two returning leading scorers: 6-foot-1 sophomore guard Tyson Etienne (9.4 points) and 6-5 junior wing Dexter Dennis (9.2), who recently withdrew his name from NBA Draft consideration and returned to WSU.
“Dexter Dennis and Tyson Etienne appear to have taken their game to another level in terms of confidence, in terms of doing more things and putting the ball on the floor opposed to just being jump shooters,” Marshall said. “Tyson is so strong and Dexter looked really good, too.”
My personal take
They are smaller and faster, and we are bigger. It will be a real test for our guards. They are rebuilding after losing their top 3 scorers from last season and other key players.

Re: Our first game of the season
Thanks for the information. It looks they will be smaller in terms of height, but their players are really strong. They usually have a good defensive team. It seems there back court will probably be a strength. This will be a really tough opponent for our back court due to our youth. Anthony is older and filled out, but the rest of our guards are smaller in build. We will have to take advantage of Queta, Bean and Anderson down low.

Re: Our first game of the season
I think this is a game we would certainly win later in the season, but is a bit of a coin flip early on because we are breaking in a nearly entirely new backcourt. We should absolutely abuse them in the post.
They are picked 7th in the AAC.

Re: Our first game of the season
I agree there guards will be tough to deal with. If we can prevent turnovers and run our offense we should have a big advantage down low. If they press a lot and create tuenovers it will be a long night.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑November 8th, 2020, 6:33 pmI think this is a game we would certainly win later in the season, but is a bit of a coin flip early on because we are breaking in a nearly entirely new backcourt. I just looked at the tourney website, USU is still scheduled to play WSU on the 25th.

Well... there’s that. Unless they hire a new coach in 15 days, looks like we’ll be playing against an interim.

My thoughts are that it does not make sense to cancel a tournament before the season. It has been reported that the Aggies were going to play in the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic that will be held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Nov. 25-27. The new event has an eight-team field and will play a true tournament format.
However, The Herald Journal has learned that most likely will not happen. USU is still in search of a tournament. There are several other possibilities the Aggies are looking into.
The rest of the non-conference schedule is shifting a bit now with the MW announcement and depending on the tournament USU gets in.

So I was wrong..Yeah, I know, who could have ever seen that happening? It looks like Wichita State is going to fire Gregg Marshall, perhaps as soon as today..The early reporting was the booster wanted him to stay but the school is taking action. From the sounds of it he had it coming.

You wouldn't be the first person to be wrong on here before . No worries. Think the aggies should be favored if there is a game. Also, given the COVID levels in SD and the musical chairs of teams coming and going, cancellation seems pretty plausible.

I listened to the coaches show last night and John Hartwell spoke. He mentioned they were playing in a tournament in South Dakota and was excited about it. Not sure if it will change or not.

Could also be wrong. But it could as easily be Smith -- known for his off the cuff, stream-of-consciousness style -- saying something like "wow, they've really had a hard time keeping this tournament going, I hope they don't have to cancel it or we're screwed..." And the HJ reporter reading into that.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑November 11th, 2020, 8:46 amCould be wrong, but it sounds like the HJ reporter is reporting exactly what Smith told him. They've announced a new women's bracket in the past week, including South Carolina, Oklahoma and Gonzaga, to play just after the scheduled men's event. The sponsors don't seem to be shutting things down. Now it's possible that the men's tournament will be scrapped but the women's will be played. But again, I give more credence to the lack of reporting by the national basketball media -- who have reported on and tweeted all the updates to the men's bracket so far -- than to the actual article from the Herald Journal. Your mileage may vary.
Nobody here knows anything.
Re: Our first game of the season
Truth is we really don't know and with COVID considerations things are constantly in flux. Things definitely tightened up locally after Governor Herbert's announcement on Sunday night.
At that point I had tickets to attend this Saturday's USU football game and I was considering attending the Sky View/Ridgeline semifinal football playoff game on Friday afternoon, then news hit that no fans will be allowed for the USU game and Sky View High School can only allow two spectators per player or coach (haven't heard anything on what they're doing as far as student attendance).

The Herald Journal had reason for saying what they said, and they were correct when they said it. At the time, our position in the tournament was still very much up in the air. Re: Our first game of the season
The tourney site has us listed but hasn't updated their bracket graphic so I took the liberty. This is a great field and will provide some great matchups. I just hope we don't end up playing Wichita, South Dakota State, then St Mary's (since we already have them scheduled). Would love for us to play Wichita, Creighton (assuming they win first game), then either Memphis/WV/TA&M.

Re: Our first game of the season
The Pentagon only holds 3,250 spectators so 25% of that is just over 800 people. I live 4 hours away and would love to go but not sure my chances are real good that I could get a ticket. I wonder how priority will go (media, families, locals,....) or if it's just first come first serve on the website. Anyone have any idea?
