In 1986-89 I was in the Aggie wilderness -- living in Houston in the pre-internet age when cable sports was basically just ESPN and TBS (not that we sprung for cable anyway), and we were rarely on either. All I knew of USU basketball was second-day scores from the agate-type Scoreboard in the Houston Chronicle (Big West scores never hit the AP wire before the Chron went to press), or an occasional visit to read the Tribune in the public library (their USU coverage wasn't much better then).

So I never saw Gilbert Pete play, and don't remember even reading much about him. And in the occasional trips down memory lane on this site when we remember our favorite players from way back when, I don't think he's ever been mentioned by you guys who were around.

Tell me about him. Is this our all-time blocks leader for three decades?

Yes it is. Was very excited watching him play as a freshman. I was quite young and loved that he could dunk (not all aggies could back then). I honestly thought he would do more offensively than he did. He obviously turned out to be a very good defensive player being the all -time block leader at 6’7. Not a long range shooter. Good out to around 15 feet. Hope I’m remembering right.

My thought, too. He's gonna be super confused why he got a crap ton of views today.

Pete has been adequately described. He was a defensive specialist, and a good one. Offensively he dunked the ball. He had an ok mid range jump shot, but didn’t shoot often. He would rather pass it.

Unfortunately there are many former Aggie basketball players who we talk very little of, if at all.

Brian Jackson
Dean Hunger
Troy Collier
Shaler Halimon, to name a few. Same goes for football.

Go to the USU Athletics Hall of Fame site and read the bios on these many players who you don’t know about. Way worth while, and will impress you much.

No, because I don't pay for premium and I have my setting to show when I look at peoples profiles because I like to see who is looking at my profile. I usually don't care because I rarely look at others profiles.

Not a big deal though. But I did catch myself hitting the back button frantically after I saw it was LinkedIn.

Haha, I haven’t messed with it that much, but it shows “5 people looked at your profile”, but you haven’t connected it just shows the industry. Good to know!

Leo Cunningham - years earlier. Maybe summer of 1980. He lost his temper and put his hand through a window - in the HPER?

Yep, during my days in Logan. After his debut, we were so excited about him.

Ah, thank you. Leo Cunningham. He seemed like he had some potential, but with the hand injury never fulfilled it.

Several years before Leo did it, Rulon Jones did the same thing. He recovered enough to be a defensive lineman for the Denver Broncos and even named NFLs defensive player of the year.

Gilbert Peete was fun to watch, at least on defense. He was super bouncy, and had some spectacular blocks, because he could cover a lot of ground, and really get up. Ironically, he seemed like a real down to earth Dude.

Gilbert Pette. Was a good rebounder and blocked shots, that’s about it. He was a fan favorite because of his hustle, plusas mentioned he could dunk. Rod Tuellar wasn’t known for getting athletic guys. He was amazing that we actually had a player that could dunk. Hell, Leo Cunningham was 6’11 and he barely could dunk. His hand that was always broke didn’t help. One of several times I took Mrs. St. Greed with me to the games was when Dan Conway was on our team. He was 6’7 from Rexburg area. He got a rebound by himself and took off for the basket. He was alone as he crossed the half court. We are all excited thinking we get to have a dunk.. he gets to the free throw line, nobody around him, and trips over his two feet and falls flat on his face! Oh my gosh! My wife felt so bad for him. Hell, the whole crowd felt sheepish! Mrs. St. Greed said oh well puts someday we will get some players that don’t trip over their two front feet!

Someone mentioned that we don’t talk to much about Shaler Halimon. Kind of true but for most of us that were 12 and 13 year olds when we saw him play in the old field house we remember him well and I would put him as one of the top 5 Aggie players. He handled the ball well and long befor Michael Jordan he could shoot with either hand and change the shot while at the apex of his jump shot. No one blocked him. He was drafted by the 76’ers. In the NBA then In order to get fans to watch they had a one on one contest in the league. Shaler made it to the final 4 one year. Nate Williams did also. I just loved watching Shaler play. He was so smooth. Loved watching Nate play also but Nate was smash mouth. I always thought Nate would have been a great player in the NFL at CB! I loved going to the games in the old field house. When the Ewe or the why came to play the atmosphere was electric., watching Ewes coach Jack Gardner bring his 6 pack of milk and him drinking them during game time was worth a ticket. When the Aggies were always trying to get in the original WAC, and always being turned down because of the Ewe and why. We swept both schools one year and actually did it several times. One year when we beat The Ewe at the fieldhouse, the students and fans started shouting “we beat the WAC Jack, we beat the WAC”. I also remember loving to watch Cornell Green and Troy Collier play. Cornell was just a great athlete, and Troy was smooth for a 6’11 center!
