Formal apology to Brock Miller

I've been highly critical of his play the past few years. I'd like to apologize. He's playing so much better this year, shooting 38.8% from three. If he can go 4/10 from 3 every game, we win most games. He even looked serviceable playing defense at times last night.

I'll sign it too, however once someone brought to my attention last year that the MW conference was using that crappy no grip ball with the chip in it I was already trying to be forgiving.

Brock is playing really well. He isn't the best defender but he is definitely not a liability out there. He stays in front of his man pretty well.

He is playing very well. Last year he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, but this year has been better. Last night he was great.

I saw a quote from Craig Smith saying as good as Miller was offensively, he was even better defensively. How does that reconcile to the general consensus on this board that he is a poor defender. Is it just that the bar is that low, or is he better than most on this board give him credit for?

I've really enjoyed watching him play.

I don't recall many on here knocking his defense. I always thought he was a capable defender. Not Tyler Newbold/Pooh Williams level, but good. My beef is that last year it felt like he would shoot us out of games at times.

Is the barn bigger?

Maybe. Last year he couldn't throw it into the ocean from a rowboat. Maybe the boat is smaller this year.

Many on here have used Brock as whipping boy and I think it's time to officially stop. Even if Brock was a high volume shooter last year with a mediocre %, he's still been nothing but a great Aggie and a great teammate.

This is true, He is taking better shots than last year. He is better at recognizing when he he should shoot.

I've already done it, but I also would officially say I'm happy with his play this year. I'm happy for him. If he and Fonso can do what they did last night, we will be hard to beat.

Looking back, we all probably should have just trusted Coach Smith. That man knows his players. He wouldn't keep trusting Brock if it wasn't best for the teams success. Has Coach Smith made any decisions that haven't ended well for us?

I thought he did a great job on shakel last night. He was chasing him around and going around screens. On the flip side SDSU did not defend Miller well last night the lost track of him, but also credit Miller for sliding around to the open spot. I would expect that to be a SDSU adjustment for the next game, but hopefully it backfires and opens thing up for Bean, Anthony and the rest of the crew.

As a frequent kicker of dead horses concerning Brick Miller's play last year, I am absolutely behind this. I've been eating my complaints with a side of crow all season.

Again, not the best athlete so that can hurt on defense, but even last year I put out there that it's not his effort. He played great last night, hustled, got open on offense, interfered on defense... great play by Brock.

I watched Miller a lot on defense, and he did not switch off on Shakle. He chased him all over the court for 30 seconds. He had great hustle and IQ to know where Shakle was trying to setup for a shot.

Players are judged on how good they are, not being a great Aggie. I’m a great Aggie but can’t play Division 1 basketball.

But having said that, he’s playing better. It took him seven years to find his shot, but better late than never. We need him.

& 3 Pt % is such a small indication of how good a player is. There's so many things Brock does that doesn't show up in a box score that make him a good player.

yeah he deserves a lot of credit for keeping Shakel in check. If he can keep guys in front of him his length is hard to shoot over.

Agreed. Shakel is actually a good matchup for him as Schakel is not exactly overly quick himself.

Queta makes every player on our team a better defensive player. We can overplay and take more risks on the perimeter.

I think he is often out of position, but because (1) he is rarely defending their best player, (2) he has enough length to make up for being out of position, and (3) Queta bails out a lot of bad defense on the perimeter, I don't think he gets burned by it as much as he could be.

I don't think he is a poor defender, but isn't going to be winning any awards any time soon.

Glad to see him playing well. He was fun to watch in high school and seemed to score in a lot of different ways. Hope he keeps developing.

He is shooting well and making some great plays this year. If there was a most improved MW player award he would deserve it.

Add me to the list. His shoot looks so smooth this year. I believe he put in some off season work.

Regarding defense, the Aggies have allowed 52, 48, 53, 45, 46 and 45 points in their last six games. That doesn’t happen unless EVERYONE is playing great defense.

Give me data that supports such an over-arching statement. Not everyone on the team excells at defense.

Wow, I'm not trying to make a scientific observation here. Just more of a comment and how well they're playing as a team. I'll see myself out of the conversation.

Uh, when you’ve statistically been the best defense in the entire nation in conference play (even with being adjusted for strength of schedule), then everyone is playing fantastic defense.

I've been wrong on Brock so far this year. He's playing much better, and I'm hoping that he can sustain that level of play for the entire season.
One observation is that he shoots noticeably better in the Spectrum than on the road.
