Exactly.

I understand Fresno's hesitation and why they didn't want to play the second game (though even that may have been overly cautious). After multiple negative tests by every single player and coach on the team though, this one is just cowardice.

How does contact tracing work here? Was it someone on the team who was exposed to someone else who had a positive test, so the other teams opted out since the exposed person might end up positive?

I brought this up in another thread, but I wonder if the Wyoming series being canceled has anything to do with the fact that we allow fans to attend. Perhaps the MWC isn't on board with that?

This is like four or five people from the original source at this point, so not very high on the source level scale, maybe not worth posting, but for what its worth. :noidea:

A member of the basketball support staff (media, trainer, or other) that travels with the team tested positive on Friday or Saturday morning. That person subsequently tested negative and traveled home with the team. The concern seems to stem from that person traveling with the team.

The COVID tests are super sensitive (some have argued actually more sensitive than is necessary) so false positives are not particularly uncommon, especially among those who may have already had and recovered from the virus.

Apparently the decision was on Wyoming's coach.

I thought this statement was very telling:
The main thing throughout the course of this year was to make sure that we kept our guys safe, not just from COVID, but mentally as well

I called it. It was clear from the beginning smell like an excuse to get out of playing us in Logan.

Now i'm pissed, Linder is just making himself and his team look like grade A wusses. I hope we meet them again and destroy them.

If that is the attitude, I expect them to also opt out of the tournament. Don’t want to see their feelings get hurt by losing to other teams like they did SDSU.

If the games aren't canceled because of Covid, and wyoming just doesn't want to play here why are they not forced to forfeit. I'm getting tired of the "Health and Safety Protocols" being thrown around to get what you want done

If the conference tries to reschedule these games in Vegas rather than Logan it will be an absolute travesty.

If it’s too risky for teams to come to Logan, it should also be too risky for these teams to come to Vegas for the conference tournament.

Reduce the tourney to four teams if there are real concerns. That’ll help protect the health and safety of all schools (can you imagine us or SDSU missing the NCAA tourney because some player from SJSU or New Mexico gave the top schools COVID at the conference tourney?) and also the NCAA Tourney resumes of the top four schools. Makes perfect sense to me now that we are vaguely throwing out “health and safety” as an excuse for avoiding games even without positive COVID tests.

A post from the WYO board

"If Linder used COVID-19 as an excuse to dodge these games he should be fired. Neither team is reporting any positive tests or indicative contact tracing."

Seems like their not to happy about it either.

I feel like if we are to get a game this week it has to be announced no later than today or tomorrow for a Friday or Saturday game.

To me, using Linder's comment as an arrow to project the "using Covid as an excuse not to go to Logan and get whipped" doesn't make any sense. First year coach that has the program on a upward trajectory, with lots of young players that benefit from gaining experience of playing and playing on the road. He's a D1 coach, with a bright future, and you don't get to where he is without being one competitive SOB who firmly believed he had a shot of knocking off a 2 time MWC Champ and if he didn't he had nothing to lose.

His statement including "Health and Safety Protocols" smells like something drafted by higher ups in the food chain with the PR department and local health "experts" looking over their shoulders. I'm just not ready to throw Linder under the bus on this one.

If I squint real hard, I can see why the game would be cancelled on Wednesday. That said, I don't see any reason why the Friday game would be cancelled.

Especially considering that the AD offered to move the series back to later in the week.

This seems the most plausible scenario. There could have been a possible exposure. However, testing immediately after a possible exposure doesn't buy you much information while in the incubation period, so the negative test results thus far don't hold much weight. It's the tests 5 to 10 days after possible exposure that will much more reliably tell you if COVID has been transmitted. I can see why Wyo may be cautious about today, but really negative tests today on should clear the game for Friday IMO.

We're already in their heads hence the "mentally" part of the statement.

No positives, no guts - go Pokes!

Here is an interesting thread over at the Wyoming boards. Really Linder really seemed to just decide he didn’t want to lose two more games.

It sure is looking that way. With contract tracing not showing the players or coaches were affected it does seem like this is on Linder. The conference would not have delayed the serirs if concerns were not brought up.

In The Herald Journal article it also sounds like we reached out to BYU and even said we would play them in Provo but they turned us down as well. Be interesting to see how we play next week, the rezet is good to a point but the team needs more playing time.

It’s a poor decision by the conference to allow this to happen then if all was fine to play. If usu wins these two games by decent margin it only helps our net ranking which possibly helps get more teams in.

Byu turned down several teams. They wanted a top 20 opponent. That way a loss doesn't hurt but a win helps.
