Just for kicks about the Spectrum
How many of you old timers went to concerts at the Spectrum in the 70’s? Name some. Here are mine.
1 John Denver
2. Hamilton, Joe, Frank, and Reynolds.
3. Nitty ditty dirt band
4. Alabama
5. Olivia Newton John
6. The Carpenters with a comic act from a new guy called Steve Martin
7. The Fifth Dimension. (The song that made them famous was The Age of Aquarius
8. Bread
9. Seals and Croft(Summer Breeze)
10. Helen Reddy
11. Sawyer Brown they came about 6 times.
The funnest moment in the Spectrum for me was we had a one and only NCAA first and second round games. Georgetown with Patrick Ewing and Sleepy Floyd was here, along with Wyoming, and USC. I can’t remember the other teams. The, NCAA said we were to small a stadium and that Logan didn’t have motels to accomidate the teams, which was true. Geez I’m board without any games for us!

I was not alive in th 70's, but Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirt band and Sawyer Brown play some of my favorite country songs. Those would have been fun to attend.

Olivia, Frankie, Karen & Richard, what's their names, Turn, Turn, Turn.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

You want strange..... i once saw the B-52's in the Marriott Center. The last of concerts in that venue has to be very short - not including the Kurt Bestor or MoTab type performances.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
Trout you got me beat by a few years, but I remember seeing Van Halen there, the one hit wonder The Knack, and Oingo Boingo. And Dan Fogelberg and John Denver. If I remember correctly the Van Halen concert was the tour for their first album??? I also remember Foghat, but maybe that was down at the old Capitol theater? Logan used to get some bigger names back in the day

Also, the Spectrum hosted two 1st round games in 1973. Tarkanian was coaching Long Beach State and Ed Ratliff (Olympian) was his star player. Oklahoma City and Arizona St. also played.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I was there is 71 for the first round of the NCAA tourney. I am quite sure we got round 1 a few times in the early 70's but I was just a lad. I watched Weber State and Long Beach State (still remember Willie Sojourner (sp?) and also our Aggies getting beat by BYU. Probably when my disdain for BYU got started.

Tracy Lawrence
Diamond Rio
Sawyer Brown twice
They were all good but Sawyer Brown was the best of them all.

Yeah, it was around September 2008. One of my friends wound up going to get sushi with them after at what used to be a sushi place by the guitar store I think, not sure how he was connected to them though.

The Doobie Brothers in 1978.
And Steve Martin was the opening act for the Carpenter's.
Corey Hart and Molly Hatchet, were two good shows.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I believe that we played and lost to BYU in the first round of a NCAA tournament game in the Spectrum. Those were the days when even little Pullburgh hosted first and second round games.. Aggies lost to Montana State in one such event.
It took a few years for the Spectrum to "warm up." The Nelson field house really rocked. Fans seemed almost afraid to make nose in the Spectrum at first.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I was there. Big bummer for me as a young kid. It was the year following our "elite 8" loss to UCLA. I think we still had Marv Roberts but I believe Nate Williams had moved on? Great years with great teams.BobWilson wrote: ↑February 15th, 2021, 11:35 amI believe that we played and lost to BYU in the first round of a NCAA tournament game in the Spectrum. Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I never saw a concert in the Spectrum, but I was a student when Dimond Rio played there. Wasn't sure how they would set up the arena for a concert, seemed perplexing to me. I always heard that one of my favorite bands from the early 80's played there, but couldn't find any information on the gig section of their web page, likely just rumor.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
The other team was West Virginia, the lack of hotel rooms, was a disaster, Logan was not ready for anything like that.troutputz wrote: ↑February 14th, 2021, 4:26 pmHow many of you old timers went to concerts at the Spectrum in the 70’s? Name some. Here are mine.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
Here’s a really odd one and I confirmed with my roommate that it did happen. Could have been one of those nights

Yes sir. David Byrne on the stage and I didn’t imagine it. Years later, I did confirm with a roommate it actually happened . Some events may have blended together occasionally.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I was at USU in the mid-90s. I don't remember one concert on campus. Not one at all. I do remember going to listen to McLean Stevenson speak in the lecture series. He had a son attending USU at the time. For those that don't recognize the name - he played Colonel Henry Blake on M*A*S*H. For those that don't know what M*A*S*H was - I don't even want to speak to you.

I also saw the B-52's in the Marriott Center, about 1989? With Love Tractor as the opening guest.

Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
A little off the time frame but in the early 90’s the circus (can’t remember which one) performed in the Spectrum. It was one of the first dates I had with who would eventually become my wife. During the performance the high wire walker fell from the wire that spanned across the top seats of the Spectrum. He was badly injured and just like you hear in the movies, the announcer asked if there was a doctor in the house. Also, the show did go on. Crazy!
Re: Just for kicks about the Spectrum
I went to Three Dog Night
Hey did anyone see the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders on a cold, snowy muddy field at Romney stadium? About 80-81?
My friend and I drove down from Blackfoot to see those amazing talented young women. Had to give them credit, they marched out there in their white cowboy boots, did the cancan and splits right in the mud. They walked off very fast after the splits. That was a crazy home game. I can't remember who we were playing. Probably Utah.
Fun times.
