NCAA tournment

Did the NCAA destroy their own tournament with their own rules?

Does the conference tournament winner still go in this situation?

I read this yesterday. Nothing has been set in stone yet, but it is being heavily discussed. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mountain West conference takes a similar approach, but the big difference is the WCC has two teams in with everyone else not having a sniff of a chance. Gonzaga would runaway with the tournament anyways. While the Mountain West conference has 4 teams on the bubble that could use the tournament to further bolster their resume. Plus any of the 4 could win the tournament. A WCC tournament not so much.

The problem with that is if BYU and Gonzaga opt out and the rest of the conference plays it would be a 3 bid conference. They would then get 3 teams in the tournament and take a bid away from the MWC or another conference. There is no way Gonzaga does not win the tournament if they play. If they are not going to play that is fine than just cancel the tournament all together.

I dont see any way the NCAA gives the WCC 3 bids even is the Zags and the Kitty Kats opt out. I think smart teams that know they are in are going to take this approach in a number of places. I get why the Zags would do this.

I hope that is the way it goes. Conference have until 2/26 to decide if they are going to award the auto bid by a conference tournament or regular season champion. My question is if BYU and Gonzaga opt out is the auto bid awarded to Gonzaga or can the WCC still hold the conference tournament with the rest of the teams and award the auto bid that way knowing that BYI and Gonzaga area already locks. In my opinion that should not be allowed, but who knows with the NCAA.

Yeah if they hold it, BYU should take the loss of whomever their first opponent would be. That might change their minds!

I would imagine that if they choose to give the bid to their tournament winner and then Gonzaga and BYU both opt out it could be BYU in dangerous territory. Gonzaga is a lock for a 1 seed at this point so there is no danger for them but if other conferences start having their team that's a lock opt out then it's going to shrink the bubble quite a bit. Some people have BYU as in right now but not everyone and if you have 5 or 6 bid stealers that could put them in dangerous territory.

This makes too much sense. The games are played for a reason. The lesser teams should still get a shot at the conference tourney. That's what makes college BBall so great.

I'd be surprised byu would do that. They're probably in, but they aren't a lock like Gonzaga obviously is.

That is a good point, if several teams from differing conferences that are all locks hold out the bubble will be shrunk. This would have ripple affects for the MWC as well. To me either all the teams are in for the tournament or just take the regular season champion. Having certain teams sit out just muddies the water.

If YBU bails on their own tourney they will run the risk of not getting invited.

I don’t think BYU is on the bubble. Unfortunately them beating SDSU and usu on the road and then being a good team the rest of the year has them in. They are a top 30 team in net.

How great would that be? If USU got in and YBU didn't because of their own arrogance - party in L-town!!!

I’m having a hard time seeing how in the world BYU is a top 30 NET team. Who have they beaten? The WCC is NOT good outside of Gonzaga. Is my hatred for this school so great that it’s blinded my reasoning?

They have 6 Q1 games. We have 6 combined in 1 and 2. They beat us and sdsu. Their worst loss is 106 in net.
