I make no predictions because I am bad at it. However, it should be noted when they play Friday it will be 19 days since the Pack last played a game..That might be a factor in your deliberations..

Do you think that is good or bad for the pack?

78-72 Wolfpack

I think the Aggies lose another game to a talented team with more athleticism.

They were really playing as well as they can when they paused. Whether they can get that back after almost 3 weeks is hard to say. They did have some guys with nicks and bruises who got a chance to heal up a bit.

With Rollie, we’re 10-15 pts better than Nevada on our home floor. We don’t have Rollie though, so I see this as a coin flip type game.

Nevada was playing pretty good ball last time they were playing. Long layoffs will hurt them though.

From Murray

Three keys for Nevada to win
1. A fast start: Nevada has had an 18-day break between games after dealing with COVID-19 issues, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Wolf Pack show some rust and look a little out of rhythm to open the game. Utah State, meanwhile, will be playing in front of a limited crowd (about 1,600 people) and is coming off back-to-back tough losses, so it should have some pep in its step to open the contest as it needs a sweep to stay in MW regular-season title contention. Nevada doesn’t want to fight out of a big deficit on the road against a fringe NCAA Tournament-caliber team, so the first 10 minutes will be key as the Wolf Pack tries to find the level it was playing at when its season was put on pause three weeks ago. Nevada is 12-2 when leading at half this season and 2-5 when trailing (it’s also 29-7 under Steve Alford when leading at half and 4-12 when not leading at intermission). This is typically an important stat, but it takes on even more importance as Nevada enters the game in an unprecedented manner after a long break.

2. Strong up front: Utah State center Neemias Queta is one of the nation’s best centers and coming off back-to-back games with at least 30 points. He’s an efficient offensive player who is one of the five most impactful defensive players in the nation. Nevada has not faced a center this talented this season. The Wolf Pack can’t get dominated by Queta, who had not scored more than 18 points in a game prior to last week. If Nevada keeps him in that 18-point range, it can live with that result. If he’s pushing 30 points again, the Wolf Pack will be in trouble. But it’s not just Queta that Nevada must worry about. Utah State is an excellent offensive rebounding team. The Aggies out-rebound their opponents by 10.4 boards per game and grab 34.8 percent of their misses, which is the 11th-best offensive rebounding rate in the nation. Nevada must limit Utah State to less than the 12.5 offensive rebounds it gets per game. Nevada's Warren Washington, K.J. Hymes and Zane Meeks have a huge task ahead.

3. Great shot selection: Utah State is a better defensive team than offensive team, and that’s largely because the Aggies are one of the best defensive teams in the nation. KenPom’s advanced metrics rank Utah State as the nation’s 21st-best defense, although that unit has slipped of late as the Aggies have gone 2-4 in their last six games. During that stretch, Utah State is allowing 102.1 points per 100 possessions after holding teams to an 84.5 mark in its first 15 games. Overall, Utah State has held opponents to 39.5 percent shooting while keeping teams off the free throw line. In its wins, Utah State has allowed foes to shoot 35.8 percent from the field; in its losses, that’s 46.8 percent. The Aggies rank sixth in the nation in defensive rebounding percentage (81.1), so it doesn’t give up many second-chance opportunities or free points at the line. As a result, Nevada’s shot selection has to be superb to pierce a strong Aggie defense, albeit one that has had some poor games, especially over the last month.

Prediction
Utah State 74, Nevada 69: It’s hard to tell how the Wolf Pack will react to such a long in-season break. The team has had ample number of practices to get ready for this contest, but no squad is used to 18 days between games in the middle of the conference season. Equally unknown is whether Utah State point guard Rollie Worster (lower leg injury) will play. Aggies coach Craig Smith declined Thursday night to give an update on his status after Worster missed the last two contests, both Utah State losses. He is one of the Aggies' most important players. The Wolf Pack and Aggies are basically equals when it comes to offensive efficiency, but Utah State is the much better defensive team when at full strength. Toss in the fact the Aggies are 7-2 at home (7-5 in all other games), and I’ll side with Utah State but take the Wolf Pack to cover (Nevada is 15-5 against the spread this season, including 10-2 in its last 12). Season record: 15-6

Long layoff really effects outside shooting in a negative way. 2nd game should be closer.

76-68 USU

I think we bounce back after tough matchups and incredible shooting by BSU. Queta will continue what was started in Boise. Miller had a bad matchup against Alston and Ashworth was flustered by BSUs size on the floor. I see this matchup similar to CSU and I think both Miller and Ashworth will perform better with these matchups. On our home floor, we should sweep.

I think the layoff hurt us a lot against Boise St. It's tough to come off a long break and play good basketball. I think we win this game easier tonight and have a close call on Sunday.

Damn. I was pretty close!

I stand by us being 10-15 points better with Rollie.

Too close down the stretch. A lot of lessons to take going into the next game. Need to play better in two halves if we hope to win the next game. Glad we got the win, but Nevada is dangerous from the outside. This is a tough team. In a way I'm glad that the win happened the way it did. We should come out in the next game more focused. If we blew them out then we would have probably ran into the same mistake that we did in the second game against Colorado State.
