I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Shulga is the youngest and had a late start, but this Nevada game showed that Shulga has serious potential. People forget Shulga hit 50% of his 3s in high school.

Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
May be right. But over who? Right now Marco, Brock and Rollie are expected back.
Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
I put Shulga over Marco. Marco is just too limited in his game, and Shulga has the complete package as a guard.
Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
I know, right. Marco played terrible tonight with his 8 assists and shut down maybe the best player in the conference.

Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Very good defense tonight.
Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Marco is a good player, but Shulga showed some real defense and was getting his hands the ball with what should be called almost steals. Shulga is scoring at a better rate than Marco, and Marco is no Worster at PG. Keep in mind, Shulga is a really young true freshmen that had a late start on playing with the team.

I liked what we saw from Shulga tonight, but let’s see if he can keep it up.

I don’t envision a starting role for him, but he will definitely be a key contributor. He has clearly supplanted Bairstow

Did you guys see how many almost steals Shulga had tonight?SLB wrote: ↑February 26th, 2021, 10:11 pmMarco is a good player, but Shulga showed some real defense and was getting his hands the ball with what should be called almost steals. Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
0 steals in the official column which is a poor image of Shulga's defense because he got hands to deflect the ball or get the ball loose for a moment a number of times. None of them were steals, but they were as I said before almost steals.ususports wrote: ↑February 26th, 2021, 10:20 pmDid you guys see how many almost steals Shulga had tonight?SLB wrote: ↑February 26th, 2021, 10:11 pmMarco is a good player, but Shulga showed some real defense and was getting his hands the ball with what should be called almost steals. Think of how much better we’d feel about Jason Shelley if we just thought of all his “almost completions”
Back to the topic, I don’t see him starting but I see him playing a lot and Bairstow maybe moving on

I like Shulga, but the only thing he has over Marco and Rollie are his shoes. He will be good player when he can shoot.
Right now he can score on a layup or a free throw. He needs to work on his confidence shooting three’s. I also don’t know if he can create his own shot.

Our coaches do track deflections so that’s kind of “almost steals”.Intermeddler wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 12:09 amI like this “almost” stat categoryususports wrote: ↑February 26th, 2021, 10:20 pmDid you guys see how many almost steals Shulga had tonight?SLB wrote: ↑February 26th, 2021, 10:11 pmMarco is a good player, but Shulga showed some real defense and was getting his hands the ball with what should be called almost steals. Shulga looked good, and we all hope he will continue to develop, but Marco does a whole lot of things that are not flashy but effective. Smith values defense. I am sure he noticed what Anthony contributed last night even if casual fans didn't.

I really like Shulga, I feel he is not a liability on the court (bless Bairstow's heart). Given some more experience and more confidence, I see him being a starter, but may not be next year unless due to injury.

I didn't think Brito started until his last year.

To paraphrase myself, Air Force is going to upset some teams and be somewhere in the middle of the conference.
Air Force has yet to play New Mexico, SJSU, UNLV, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Colorado State. They have one more against Wyoming.
New Mexico, SJSU, UNLV, Wyoming, and Fresno State combine in-conference record is 5-23 at this very moment.
Shulga has potential and a full year in the program will be great for him. Euros got here late last year.
Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Air Force after beating Wyoming in MWC play then they had a complete meltdown. I am not sure why they had decent defense then crap defense, and I thought that they would improve not the other way around. They had only one bad loss at that point with their loss to Seattle early in the season.Blitz79 wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 10:21 amI didn't think Brito started until his last year. When you throw (I can't express myself without swearing) to the wall some of it will stick.SLB wrote: ↑January 16th, 2021, 5:08 pm

Brito started in the 2017-2018 season 23 times, and Brito started 7 times in his last season and played 28.1 minutes per game.

Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
I never have anything to pat myself on the back for but I did observe that for a split second Shulga was thinking about a dunk but at the last moment decided to play it safe. Only to catch a bunch of crap when he went to the bench.
BTW...I thought Marco was outstanding last night. He played great D and stayed within himself and the offense all night. That's been my biggest concern about Marco is that often times the ball stops with him and everyone else stands around. We didn't see much of that last night.

Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Marco has been double-edge sword so much of this season where his defense was great but his offense created chances for the other team to score. Marco is starting now since he is a top 3 guard, but his offense is best when he gives the ball to someone else to make plays which is why I say that Marco is limited. Marco is a RS JR not a freshmen.Bank Shot wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 10:44 amI never have anything to pat myself on the back for but I did observe that for a split second Shulga was thinking about a dunk but at the last moment decided to play it safe. Shulga will be a contributor next year, I don't know if he will start but will get lots of minutes. He showed poise and a solid iq last night. I think some of you had way to high of expectations of Marco. You thought he'd be Sam. Marco has been solid all year and will be an even bigger piece next year.

Who thought he’d be as good or better than Sam, maybe 1-2 optimistic posters during the slow offseason when there isn’t much to talk about? Maybe his best friend or a relative? I’m curious who this “you” is that you’re referring to.... I think all of us should want the current players to be successful.brian5562 wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 12:07 pmShulga will be a contributor next year, I don't know if he will start but will get lots of minutes. I was noticing the same thing as Brian in that there was seriously some people carried away with Anthony, and it was like every layup made by Anthony was hyped as much as Merrill's 27 points in the biggest game.Pacobag wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 12:50 pmWho thought he’d be as good or better than Sam, maybe 1-2 optimistic posters during the slow offseason when there isn’t much to talk about? I thought Marco did great at passing last night. That is when he is at his best. When he does hero ball too often it is not good for the team.Bank Shot wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 10:44 amI never have anything to pat myself on the back for but I did observe that for a split second Shulga was thinking about a dunk but at the last moment decided to play it safe. Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
The one thing i noticed Shulga doing last night that Bairstow or Miller or Worseter or Ashworth never seem to do is cut to the basket. He got two easy layups because he moved to the basket and looked for a pass. Those other guys never seem to do this and it's frustrating. I can't imagine the offense changes when Shulga is in - he is just more active, i guess. It's elementary basketball - when your man double teams the post player with the ball, you cut to the front of the rim. Bairstow could have a field day doing this with his size but he never does. Some guys cut, but just go through the motion and don't look for the ball.

Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
I'm just pleasantly surprised that it appears one of the three Euros that Smith's staff went after might actually prove to be a decent role player. I really thought none of them would see a full 4 years at USU.
Re: I believe that Shulga will become a starter next season
Zapala would play, but we have Dorius and Queta in front of Zapala. He will get his chance next season.
