I used to be 100 percent in favor of going with frehmen recruiting only..But as you have just seen...freshmen tend to leave..transfers tend to stay,,

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
This is why the transfer portal is changing the sport, and not for the better. If you can recruit guys who are finished products rather than develop them, who is going to go after the HS guys with unrealized potential?
I guess it might be good for the JC's, kind of like the Baseball model where JC's are often preferred because players get to leave for milb sooner than if they enroll in a four year school.

Yeah, with transfers someone else has already trained ‘em up and you only have to hold onto them for one or two years as opposed to four.
Really big potential to change college basketball recruiting forever, and some could argue ruin college basketball recruiting forever.

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
Right, you get them to the point where they are a finished product or close to finished product, and then all your hard development work goes to benefit a P5 school. I agree with Jon Rothstein on Twitter — I really wonder if mid-majors will just stop recruiting HS kids altogether. The transfer portal just makes low and mid-majors glorified farm teams for the P5 schools. We may be better off recruiting JCs and hoping to pick up low-major guys that play well or P5 washouts in the transfer market than recruiting high school kids.cval wrote: ↑April 9th, 2021, 2:02 pmThis is why the transfer portal is changing the sport, and not for the better. A whole bunch of these transfers are P-5 guys dropping down to mid majors for playing time..

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
You either look for highly recruited bench players on P5 teams or you look for the best players on lower or equal level mid-major teams .....or you recruit a combination of both. Some consider Juco players as transfers as well, which technically they are, but I consider them to be in an altogether different group. Not that you can't get good players from JUCO but proving your ability at that level is not the same. I imagine Odom will be open to utilizing all three of these.

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
Correct me if I’m wrong, but transfers also come in knowing they have to sit out a year if decide to transfer again before they graduate. Analytically, I would guess going forward a P-5 player dropping down as a Sophomore (2nd year freshman this year) would be a much better to build a team around than recruiting kids out of high school or JV when they would still have a one time free transfer.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 9th, 2021, 2:03 pmYeah, with transfers someone else has already trained ‘em up and you only have to hold onto them for one or two years as opposed to four.

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
I believe the one time transfer rule will be voted on and approved next month. The kids can transfer once and not have to sit out. In non-covid times they can then only leave as a grad transfer. Second time transfers will have to sit out. They will be able to seek waivers but the NCAA won't be handing those out to everybody like they did for covid times.Full wrote: ↑April 9th, 2021, 3:13 pmCorrect me if I’m wrong, but transfers also come in knowing they have to sit out a year if decide to transfer again before they graduate. Michael flowers the high scoring guard from south alabama is off to Washington st. Was some speculation that if we hired Riley he might come with him.

Re: Big name in the transfer portal
That seems to be the newest recruiting tool. Outgoing coaches letting slip to players that if said players happened to be in the transfer portal then perhaps that coach may have a spot for them at the new school.SpectrumMagic wrote: ↑April 11th, 2021, 7:33 pmGood call - Slocum came from UNLVhipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑April 11th, 2021, 7:26 pmHis new assistant brought him along like luggage.breadysmith wrote: ↑April 11th, 2021, 7:24 pmSure...now he can actually reel in a grad transfer

If all else find the player’s father, uncle, or cousin and hire him on staff, regardless of experience.

Desnews reporting that they expect jones back as well (who knows how accurate that is). If that is the case and with the addition of Jenkins I’m not sure Utah is Rollie’s next destination.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 11th, 2021, 5:58 pmSure enough.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 9:45 amI'm fully expecting David Jenkins from UNLV to end up at Utah. Everythign about Nuga tells me he's trying to go to a high major school. I highly doubt we see him here at USU.

Well yeah most of these kids with his numbers will end up at p5. The odds are that way and it’s not hard to assume that. But I still like our staff is reaching out and you never know. South alabama star player this year was a high scoring guard from the MAC.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 11:34 amEverythign about Nuga tells me he's trying to go to a high major school. Re: Big name in the transfer portal
Not necessarily, there are 1300 dudes in the portal. Of course, not all of them are not stars but many are good players. With the eligibility freeze, there are very few open spots to be had, even at the high-level P5's. We should be competitive with the lower less successful P5 programs for some of these guys. That said, we might have to wait a while to see how things shake out at the top.slcagg wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 11:59 amWell yeah most of these kids with his numbers will end up at p5. I've argued on the other thread that we should also be going hard after high-level high school talent also as it will be a depressed market full of opportunities.

Looks like the prediction of Liam Robbins following his uncle, Ed Conroy, were 100% accurate. Both headed to Vandy. This also means Ed Conroy is not going to be one of our assistants.

That would be a great pickup if we got Michael Nuga. Averaging almost 20 points for a solid MAC team. Sign me up
