Past Coaching Moves
Let's look at the last coaching moves as to where Utah State should go.
When Rod Tueller left- we hired his assistant Kohn Smith who was let go after 5 seasons and not winning a Big West Tournament game.
After Smith was let go-We bring in Larry Eustachy the Head Coach of Idaho who had past success and was very successful here getting us back to the NCAA Tournament. He was hired to Iowa State.
After Eustachy we bring in Stew Morrill who had success at Colorado State and had great success here.
After Morrill we bring in his assistant Tim Duryea, fired after three mediocre seasons.
After Duryea we bring is Smith who was Head Coach at South Dakota and had success.
There's a pattern. When we bring in a successful head coach from another program we have success. When we have hired internally it hasn't gone well.

Re: Past Coaching Moves
It's not necessarily because we hire internally. It's because we don't do an expanded search and give consideration to the best possible candidates. If the best possible candidate comes from internal or from a referral, great. If not, great. We just need to hire the best possible candidate.

Re: Past Coaching Moves
If memory serves, Kohn Smith came from Indiana to be Rod’s assistant knowing he was going to retire and that he would get the job. Am I remembering correctly?

Re: Past Coaching Moves
Yeah I would prefer a proven Head Coach. That has worked out the last 3 times we have done it. The last two times we hired assistants internally it did not. I'm not saying Eric Peterson wouldn't be a good hire. He might be, but I'd prefer a proven Head Coach.

Yes. Rod was the AD and Coach. Kohn came in to be the assistant and coach in waiting from what I remember. He was an assistant for one year. He had never been a head coach at the collegiate level.bluegrouse wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 9:20 amIf memory serves, Kohn Smith came from Indiana to be Rod’s assistant knowing he was going to retire and that he would get the job. Re: Past Coaching Moves
I like the idea of getting a successful head coach. Craig was good even though his record wasn’t great. What if this time we can get a great one! One that can develop supporting cast.

Agreed. In football you have 84 scholarships, in basketball you have 13.
You could, theoretically, strike out on 3/4 and still field a worthy starting lineup in football. If you strike out on 3/4 basketball players you don't even have enough starters, let alone any depth.

Not quite true. I see where you're going, but it doesn't work that way. You need depth in football or you're going to lose a lot even if you have some excellent starters. When we've been thin, we can't even get out of fall camp without having big holes that can't be filled by schemes or another player's talent. Those holes will be exposed every time.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑March 27th, 2021, 9:35 amAgreed. In football you have 84 scholarships, in basketball you have 13.
