Player Transactions
There have been rumors about players entering the transfer portal. Is any of this confirmed? To date, the only official statements about personnel changes on the team are:
1 - Alfonso Anderson has entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer looking for a place to play his final year.
2 - Neemias Queta has hired an agent and declared eligibility for the NBA draft.
Any others that anyone knows of and/or can confirm?
Karwowski was a senior last year, but could stay for another year, per NCAA rules. All others are able to return to the team, as well, if they want.

Re: Player Transactions
Max Shulga is staying.
I'm also hearing that Sean Bairstow is now reconsidering.

Fantastic! Do you have any insight you can provide as to why Shulga is now staying, when he'd previously been leaning towards transferring?
I believe it was mentioned that Sam had reached out to the team as a steadying influence... has that helped with any of the guys who are considering a move?

Per hartwell bean and Miller have also been steadying influences. John hartwell is a key piece as well. Never realized how important it is for an AD to help hold a team together during this window.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:12 amFantastic! I’d guess for someone with shulga is he is hopeful for a fresh start with a new staff.

Re: Player Transactions
Reasonable. His limited minutes at the end of last season were great looking; he has a really good chance with a new HC to break into more rotation minutes (not unlike Bairstow, and potentially Liam).slcagg wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:19 amPer hartwell bean and Miller have also been steadying influences. I don't know, I've got to be honest here. Given the plethora of talent that it's in the portal and seeing the roster we have coming back, I had hoped we've have more than just the two spots available that we have.

I imagine a senior like Karwowski might get invited to transfer elsewhere for his 2nd senior year by a new staff.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:56 amI don't know, I've got to be honest here. I really hope the new coach has at least 3 scholarships to work with.

As I highlighted here https://www.usufans.com/Forums/viewtopi ... =6&t=57285, two scholarships being available is counting Karwowski moving on. If he stays, there's only one available.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:00 amI imagine a senior like Karwowski might get invited to transfer elsewhere for his 2nd senior year by a new staff.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:56 amI don't know, I've got to be honest here. Which is an interesting point you bring up. I was confident the past staff was going to have him move on and make it available. I have to now assume the new staff would not do that and the only chance he moves on now is if he decides to. We may actually only have one spot available.

Re: Player Transactions
We only need two very high caliber players to be back on track. Also, we don't know, yet, if we're only looking at two spots left. The new staff will need to meet the team and then have individual player meetings before it's set in stone.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:56 amI don't know, I've got to be honest here. Kuba needs to go. We don't need 3 players Trevin, Kuba and Zapala taking up 3 scholarships when i am not certain there is player in that group ready to give 25-30 minutes per game and average 10points and 6 rebounds per game.

Sure doesn't seem to be a need for Nigel. Another developmental big is over kill and I don't see why we could expect him to put up 10/6.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:07 amKuba needs to go. Not that Trevin doesn't deserve a scholarship, though I thought he didn't need one because his parents are "loaded."
But it was kind of messed up for Smith to give scholarship to a Walk on and then leave the next day.

Re: Player Transactions
David Jenkins from UNLV entered the transfer portal yesterday. That is one guy that could make an impact at USU. UNLV has lost 7 guys to the transfer portal this year. They are perpetually building a team from scratch down there, it seems.
Jenkins shot 45% from three his last season at South Dakota St. (and 41% last season at UNLV).

Re: Player Transactions
Have to agree here. I am torn between wanting to support "our guys" and wanting "our team" to stay relative. I really thought we would be looking at 4 open spots minimum (at least 2 moving on between Shulga, Zapala, Bairstow, and McChesney). Throw in Miller and his back issues combined with where he is at in school and I thought we might even have 5.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:56 amI don't know, I've got to be honest here. I fear 2 is just not going to cut it for next year....Kuba staying and having 1 would be even more disastrous.

I am happy with Shulga coming back. He showed enough last year that with an offseason of improvement he could be an important rotation piece.Bank Shot wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:10 amSure doesn't seem to be a need for Nigel. Otherwise, and without singling anyone out, I agree with Roy and think we have way too many scholarships devoted to bigs and wings that don’t have the potential to become MW level starters or even solid rotation players.
I was hoping to hold on to the core guys, but also hoping for a bit of roster turnover.

Re: Player Transactions
In all fairness, it sounds like even earlier in that same day CS didn't know he was going anywhere. I would assume he did it because he believed it to be in the best interest of the team. Nothing he did as HC would indicate anything other than our team's best interest at heart.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 12:57 pmWait, that really happened? Can confirm Bairstow and Shugla are considering leaving. I think this is in part because it looks like Marco and Rollie are going to enter the portal. Might follow Smith or look at least look at their options elsewhere.

So either it wasnt as bad as we all made it out to be or these guys are just suckers. I’m leaning towards it wasn’t as bad as we have made it out to be.

Re: Player Transactions
If you believe the Hartwell interview, Craig Smith didn't know he was leaving until late. It happened very fast. Not saying he handled well, but I don't think he gave a guy a scholarship just to spite USU. At that moment, he still thought he was the Aggie coach for the future.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 1:21 pmThat's called burning bridges.
