Re: Player Transactions
Yeah you can't let the players hire the coach as much as we love them. In almost every single case they have an assistant on staff that they would prefer over some unknown. Hell, I bet after Duryea was fired if you said "Ok guys it is up to you, you can have Craig Smith from South Dakota, Tommy Lloyd from Gonzaga or we will just promote Louis Wilson, who do you want?" Wilson would have won the vote.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 3:38 pmAgreed. I think for a few reasons. One being that it's not smart to make what is hopefully a longterm coaching decision based on the feelings of some players that will be gone in 2-3 years. And another being you can't let players feel they have that kind of power in the situation. Ask their opinions and take them into account, but you can't give them the impression that they get to choose the coach.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 3:19 pmThe old "but he's who the players wanted" line isn't going to fly around here like it might elsewhere.
It has been mere months since we've been severely burned by that thinking.

But was Peterson interested in the job? Maybe Utah is paying him close to $1M...

Re: Player Transactions
In 2015 didn't Utah bump up Tommy Connors to above what USU offered him to be the Head Coach? We talk about Smith's contract, but unfortunately what P5 schools can pay assistants is also a big difference.aggiesdotcom wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 8:24 amBut was Peterson interested in the job? I am hearing that he expressed interest in the job. It was made apparent, after his inquiry, that he was not going to get the position. I am not sure if salary was ever discussed.

Watching USC, Oregon State, and UCLA in the tourney this year I'm not sure if Marco would be a good fit in the PAC-12. You've got to be able to contribute consistently on both sides of the floor.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 2:26 pmI heard there's some real smoke to Marco following Smith to Utah.

That sucks. Marco was on my list of those I was hoping to hold onto. I hope he stays. He’s a really good defender.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 2:39 pmWatching USC, Oregon State, and UCLA in the tourney this year I'm not sure if Marco would be a good fit in the PAC-12. I don’t think this is a move that would be great for Marco from a playing standpoint, but I could be wrong.
EDIT: to be clear, I think he will play and absolutely can play at that level, but he’d have a much larger role here, IMO.

Honestly, he was the one player I figured we wouldn't retain if Smith left. So yes I can see him following Smith to Utah.aggies22 wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 2:43 pmI believe this is how it is going to go down as well.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 2:26 pmI heard there's some real smoke to Marco following Smith to Utah.

Yeah, Marco basically came to Logan because of the tie to Smith recruiting him out of HS. I could see him wanting to finish out his career playing for him.

I just can’t see him actually playing much though. PAC 12 is long and athletic. I wouldn’t say Marco is either one of those. You could argue athletic maybe.Aglicious wrote:Yeah, Marco basically came to Logan because of the tie to Smith recruiting him out of HS. At least we'll have Bean on the roster next year. Might be him and 12 new guys.

Marco is big, strong, and athletic. He is long for a guard. His biggest issue is his shooting.Usu0505 wrote: ↑March 31st, 2021, 2:54 pmI just can’t see him actually playing much though. Re: Player Transactions
I was discussing today with a Ute friend of mine, and he was asking about potential people who might follow Craig Smith. I gave him the background story on Marco, including how he's only here because he followed Coach Smith. While I'm disappointed, I would expect (and understand) Marco to follow him to the U. He can absolutely play at that level.
It's disappointing, but it makes sense. And they don't have to worry about bickering over numbers, because nobody on that team has 44 right now.

Re: Player Transactions
I mean everyone on here wants to talk about how good we are, and how we could do this or that, but the minute things come up, yall are like, "Coach Smith can't coach at a PAC-12 level" or "Marco can't play at a PAC-12 level". It's inconsistent and stupid.
Either these guys really are good, or they're not. Marco is either an elite defender with a weird shot, or he's an okay defender just because he's not playing good competition. He doesn't get to be both depending on what better suits your current argument. Either Craig Smith can outcoach better teams (see SDSU this year and last year, when SDSU was obviously at/above PAC-12 levels of competition), or it was a fluke and he got lucky. You can't have it both ways.

Re: Player Transactions
The problem I see with our current roster, as constructed, is it was Queta and a whole bunch of role players. I do think Bean will flourish with a little more room to maneuver in the middle. He's definitely a 15 feet-in type of player, and showed that he can be very good doing that on many occasions.
Going forward with whomever the coach is, we need to see a few more guys who can take the rock into their hands and create and make some things happen. The new coach needs to bring/find at least two of the kinds of players who can operate with the ball in their hands, and create their own shot and make it. We have very few of those now.

I do believe that ash-worth is staying in logan so depending on who stays and goes are starting five would be 1. ashworth 2. rollie 3. miller 4.bean 5.dorius? that starting five is the whitest team ever
Re: Player Transactions
Not only is it very white, but it is not a team that will win a lot of games. I don't think USU was going to be very good next year even with Craig Smith. Hopefully the new coach can get some transfers or it might be a long season.
