David Ragland & Austin Hansen
It sounds like Eric Peterson is the only assistant coach going with Craig Smith to Utah. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Ragland & Hansen. I wonder if one will be retained by the new coaching staff.
Also, how about Craig Smith huh? Lead everyone to believe you're not taking the job, then take the job without telling anyone first, have your players find out you're leaving on Twitter, and then leave the dudes who helped get you there in the dust.

I wonder if smith has to keep the assistants at Utah who have sons on the team there.

Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
Nothing official yet, but it sounds like two of Smith's assistants will be Eric Peterson & Demarlo Slocum.
That 3rd assistant is the interesting one. There's some smoke he may hire Chris Burgess from BYU. One of Utah's star player's dad is also an assistant coach (Larry K hired him to land his son as a player), if he lets go of the dad the kid will likely transfer as well. So he made need to be retained.

I can confirm that Eric did in fact make the move to Salt Lake.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 9:02 amIt sounds like two of Smith's assistants will be Eric Peterson & Demarlo Slocum.

Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
Be interesting if Harlan forced his hand on bringing in some other assistants rather than bringing his assistants that have been with him. It is never a great situation if the AD hires you to be the coach, but then mandates who the assistants are. Not saying that happened, but be interesting to see how it works out. Sucks for Hansen and Ragland, but such is life in the coaching profession.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 8:55 amIt sounds like Eric Peterson is the only assistant coach going with Craig Smith to Utah. Not true at all. Utah did not make contact until later that night, after Johnnie Bryant turned the job down.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 8:55 amIt sounds like Eric Peterson is the only assistant coach going with Craig Smith to Utah. Maybe that's true, maybe it isn't. However, nothing in my post goes against that statement and makes it "not true at all".Sike wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 9:26 amNot true at all. Yip, the big red school down south is big on censorship. Smith will be told who he's allowed to talk to, what he's allowed to talk about, what he's allowed to say, what he's not allowed to say, what he's allowed to wear, who he's allowed to hire, who he's allowed to play, etc. but for a guaranteed 18 million it's well worth it.

The assistants are who I feel bad for. They were successful and now may be out of jobs.
The players at least still have their scholarships.

I tried to get five in there, but I am not that good. Just remember that odd numbers of negatives stay negative. Even numbers of negatives go positive.

Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
Are the assistants technically out of jobs now or does USU retain them until the new coach is hired and ultimately decides whether or not to keep them on board?

Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
I was wondering the same thing. The assistant coaches have contracts with the University, not the head coach, right? Do they have buyout clauses? Or is it written in their contracts that their employment is tied to the head coach and they leave when he leaves or is fired? I'm not sure how that works.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:24 amAre the assistants technically out of jobs now or does USU retain them until the new coach is hired and ultimately decides whether or not to keep them on board?

I assume they still have jobs as of now. I assume one is the acting head coach right now.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:24 amAre the assistants technically out of jobs now or does USU retain them until the new coach is hired and ultimately decides whether or not to keep them on board?

Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
Hartwell didn't mention who was acting as head coach during his call with Scotty. I got the impression that he and the experienced players were overseeing things but I have When he canned Duryea he appointed Spencer as acting Head Coach.Donman wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:32 amI assume they still have jobs as of now. Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
Pretty much. For anyone who says it isn't a rivalry, you know damn well Utah didn't want Smith praising USU at the press conference. I've watched my share of new coach press conferences and that was one of the worst as far as acknowledging and paying respect to your past job. I would bet money that came from the top. I'm sure Smith would have given a ton of praise to USU if he was a press conference at Minnesota.ViAggie wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 11:46 amUddah: Here's $12 Million for six years, now STFU and do what we tell you!Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 10:36 amYip, the big red school down south is big on censorship. Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
The crazy thing to me is that he agreed to it. Knowing that I would not be allowed by my employer to say something kind and be respectful would be a major red flag for me. If you’re playing with my character and taking away my freedom to be cordial and humane, I don’t care how much you’re paying.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑March 30th, 2021, 1:44 pmPretty much. Re: David Ragland & Austin Hansen
My impression was, he was happy to get the money but the enthusiasm for the job was not real.
He got a lot of money for a guy who is still looking for his first NCAA Tournament win. Utah got desperate and desperate people do desperate things.
My prediction he will be gone in three years and Utah will be right where they are today, again...
