Remember this? Rumor was Odom actually eventually turned down the Virginia Tech job in 2019.

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
Of Odom, Conroy, and Konkol (the three "finalists") I am happy with Odom.
I will admit, Riley's recruiting and expertise with transfer players was appealing and he shot to the top of my list, but Odom is a solid hire.

I'm actually really smart, probably smarter than you are so if you disagree with what I have stated in this post, you are likely wrong (and dumb).

I am thrilled with the hire if this turns out to be true.

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
Yeah, USU can do better than a current D1 head coach that wins 2/3 of his games and has probably the most consequential NCAA tourney win in the last 20 years.
Count me as super happy if true!

He's good enough for Virginia Tech but not good enough for us?

So Riley was plan A, he fell through and Odom is Plan B ?

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
He's won 1 more NCAA tournament game than we have in the last 20 years, but I'm just not sold on his ability to recruit. Would've preferred Riley, but looks like he might've turned us down.JonnyCienPesos wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 11:45 amBy what metric?Aggiesbleedblue wrote:Pretty underwhelming hire tbh. Hope I'm wrong.

Odom has as many NCAA tournament wins as Stew and Smith combined.

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
Did everyone miss Jonny’s post that Odom allegedly has transfers on board?
I’ll note — UMBC was a better team than USA this year, so maybe we want their players more?

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
To be honest i don't know a whole lot about Odom. He seems to have been solid at UMBC and has got that program to win consistently in their league. Hopefully he is a good recruiter and we can get some transfer in here. Welcome abaord.

Also, after the football hire announcement, I imagine this is solid. They wouldn’t have posted this time around if they weren’t 100% sure.

I was leaning toward Odom since he took a terrible team and turn them into a winning team.aggies22 wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 11:54 amIt was down to Coach Odom and Richie Riley.Intermeddler wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 11:45 amOf Odom, Conroy, and Konkol (the three "finalists") I am happy with Odom.

I wonder what Marco thinks of it? Was he on Virginia when they lost to Odom's UMBC squad?

To be clear, by "finalists" I meant as determined by the dominant board discussion not who the actual finalists were in Hartwell's hiring process.aggies22 wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 11:54 amIt was down to Coach Odom and Richie Riley.Intermeddler wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 11:45 amOf Odom, Conroy, and Konkol (the three "finalists") I am happy with Odom.

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
I think Odom builds better for the long term stability. I would have worried about Riley bringing in a ton of guys that don’t fit the culture and turn things on their head just so he can take off in another few years. I think guys like Rollie, Marco, and current core are more likely to stick around with Odom.

I wonder if any of their guys would follow Odom. Their top guy is from England. They actually have another forward from England as well. Perhaps they would want to come play with a bunch of other Europeans.

Ryan Odom = solid 8/10 in the looks department. Will probably be with you for at least a good five years, maybe forever depending on how things go. Much more sensible decisions will be made, and it’ll still be pretty fun.

Re: Aggies 22 Says It's Odom
How good of a recruitier is Odom? He has done well at UMBC who basically has very little basketball history so I feel he will be a good X's and O's coach. I have no clue how good of a recruiter he is and how much he will use the transfer portal. We certainly can't solely live off the transfer portal, but we should try and bring in ~1-2 impact transfers each year.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 12:10 pmRichie Riley = super hot supermodel that’s gonna churn and burn ya after two or three of the wildest and funnest years if your life.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 12:04 pmI think Odom builds better for the long term stability.
