I brought it up in the other thread but it got lost a little. One of the big questions JH was going to ask in interviews, is who would make up the staff. Does anybody have any insight on this. Is Odom bringing some of his staff with him. Is he going to retain some current. Or is he just going to start over?

Is he going to get Spencer or Jaycee?

In another thread it was mentioned that an "Aggie" may be on staff, not sure if that means a former player or a current assistant. If current assistant maybe Coach Ragland?

Unless I missed a recent announcement, Jaycee is still playing in Europe.

I have to think there’s about a 0% chance of that happening.

Are there any former Aggie basketball players are working their way up through the coaching profession like Chucky, DJ or AL on the football side?

A lot of posters bring up Spencer being an assistant, but is Spencer even coaching anymore? I love Spencer but would rather have a coach who is looking to move up the ranks.

Didn't miss anything. He literally played in a game yesterday for Real Madrid. He won't be coming back to coach anytime soon.

Tai Wesley just wrapped up his pro career and I believe is living in Utah somewhere. He'd be an amazing assistant coach! Or maybe Jalen Moore.

One of my favorite people In the world (let alone Aggie ballers) is a guy by the name of Tyler Newbold. He would make an incredible coach. All around amazing person. He has that ability to make people feel special.

But the private sector also knows how awesome Tyler is and I doubt we could score him. But it’s a cool thought (at least to me). If I had my pick of former aggies to coach it would 100% be him.

I am pretty sure he has said he will retire after this season (but if I remember he said the same thing last season). I think aggies22 said he is planning on coaching one of the high schools in the valley next year.

Nope. That wasn't me. I read that too so I started digging. I've been unable to verify that. The only way this happens is if someone who is currently planning on having a job next season is fired.

I was not sure if it was you or not. Somebody said it, and anytime some has information my default is to artibute it to you. It may not happen.

I have heard from a very good source (probably an 8.5 out of ten on Jaycee information) that he wants to coach when he retires. But he may want to stick to coaching high school.

Yeah Jaycee won't be on staff next year. The staff will be finalized well before Real Madrid's season ends. I do wish he was the shooting coach for some of the players on our team.

Why are you enamored with Spencer as an assistant? When Smith came in and did not retain him Spencer took a job with a financial advisory group. He’s been out of the coaching ranks for three years.

There were people on here that made it out to be this horrible thing that Craig Smith didn't retain Spencer. Then Smith went out and won 76% of his MW games over the next 3 years, something nobody thought possible.

Just because someone was great as a player at USU doesn't mean they are a good coach and should be on staff.

Hopefully Odom builds a staff that he is comfortable with, like Smith did. I wonder if there is any chance Ragland or Hansen get hired back?

Not quite. Nobody thought it was “horrible”. Some of us did think it might be a good idea to have someone act as a “bridge” for the current players and to help navigate the state of Utah.

If that happens, I think his older brother Doug will become our #1 fan.

I personally hope one of Austin Hansen or David Ragland is retained.

The way some are with Spencer Nelson on this board, one would think he is John Wooden reincarnated.

I don’t think so. I remember there being so much pressure there Craig Smith had to address the topic of Spencer Nelson early on in interviews & maybe even his introductory press conference.

Do you guys know Spencer? There is a reason people are high on him.

He just relates to people, pretty much everyone. He can return to the investment banking business anytime he wants, but was excited to try coaching, and by all accounts was really good at it.

I don’t know if he still wants to, but if he did, he would be successful, and I would love to see it.

Why are you enamored with Spencer as an assistant? Went Smith came in and did not retain him Spencer took a job with a financial advisory group.

Not quite. Nobody thought it was “horrible”. Some of us did think it might be a good idea to have someone act as a “bridge” for the current players and to help navigate the state of Utah.

It has been blown WAYYYYYYYYYY out of proportion

I don’t think so. I remember there being so much pressure there Craig Smith had to address the topic of Spencer Nelson early on in interviews & maybe even his introductory press conference.
Craig felt so much pressure from usufans.com that he had to address it? Because that’s the claim that Hawaii is making and you are agreeing with.

He just relates to people, pretty much everyone. He can return to the investment banking business anytime he wants, but was excited to try coaching, and by all accounts was really good at it.

I don’t know if he still wants to, but if he did, he would be successful, and I would love to see it.
Careful. Everybody is gonna freak out on you now. You’re asking for trouble.

Spencer is one of my all-time favorite Aggie players. But I’m interested in the evidence of your statement that “by all accounts” he was really good as an assistant. He was on Duryea’s staff for two years. During those two years we finished 7th and 8th in the conference and were a combined 6 games under .500. What am I missing?

No evidence I can present. Just what I heard through the grapevine. I am not going to get into a back and forth about it.

Just think how bad we would have been without Spencer on TD’s staff. ;)

I have no idea if Spencer is great as an assistant. He got lots of praise as a player. Stew probably spoke as highly of Spencer Nelson as anyone else he ever coached. Spencer recruited Bean. There are definitely more experienced and qualified candidates with stronger recruiting ties, but I’m note sure how significant the contributions are for a 3rd assistant. It would be great to see a former Aggie great on staff, but I don’t know if any former Aggie greats would make an excellent assistant.
