Re: Staff
This is how I feel. You get the best coaches that are available. If they are former aggies, great, but get the best people available. All that matters is that the coaches are good coaches/recruiters and treat the players with the respect they deserve. No need to pigeon hole your options. With the landscape the way it is any coach can be successful at any location in the country so long as they are a good coach. I always find it odd that Michigan football is always obsessed with finding a Michigan man to be their head coach. Why in the hell does it matter, just get the best coach that is available.antibluehair wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 9:18 amI would personally like to see guys retained from the previous staff rather that hiring a former player or "Alumnus".
I would like to see the best Assistants not some dude that's an Aggie.

Two of the three assistant spots are filled. Possibly all three. I can't say much more than that right now. I'm sorry.

Shouldn’t we assume Odom is likely bringing an assistant or two from UMBC? I’d think Nate Dixon is likely coming along as he’s Odom’s right hand man from what I can tell. He seems to be the lead recruiter that brought in their UK players and several other prominent pieces in their team.

There might be a few upset about lack of a former Aggie on staff, but I don't think most people get worked up over assistant coaching hires in basketball. Assistants basketball coaches also don't seem to get the criticism that football coaches get.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 12:05 pmThe only question i have is will the majority of us be happy with the hires or are we going to have repeated melt down like we do on so many topics?

Spencer not being retained might not have been because Smith didn't want him. Maybe he just didn't want to coach anymore. I don't think he's tried to get another coaching job since.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 5th, 2021, 10:39 pmYeah there were some people pretty angry with Smith on this board for not retaining Nelson. Just because someone was great as a player at USU doesn't mean they are a good coach and should be on staff.

From what I’ve been told, Craig offered Spencer a chance to stay on staff in a support job but not as a full assistant and he left to do financial planning or whatever it is he does now.ProvoAggie wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 2:32 pmSpencer not being retained might not have been because Smith didn't want him.
