Coaching candidates

Post by Aggiesbleedblue » March 27th, 2021, 7:54 am

What candidates would you like to see us consider? I’ll start: Joe Pasternack

Seems like just yesterday we were playing this game.

Pasternak would be good.

Miles could be good, but is a bit of a re-run at this point.

The real question is, which lower level school in the midwest or south has a high-energy coach? That's who we should be researching.

Tim Miles will be an option if we want him. I was high on him when the hypothetical was Smith going to Minnesota or Marquette. With him going to Utah, I kinda hope we stay away from that coaching tree. I also worry about what I assume to be a lack of current recruiting connections.

I’m sure Eric Peterson would be a candidate, but it sounds like he’s not quite ready to put on his big boy pants and leave Smith’s nest.

I want a head coach with some history of success. Todd Simon, Pasternack, Miles would be a solid start for me.

Tommy Connor is a name out there, not sure if he is retained at Utah, but has been successful at lower levels.

If Connor isn't good enough for the Utah job he's not good enough for the USU job.

If I was hiring a basketball coach I’d look at hiring one of these four, Kyle Neptune, Brian Michaelson, Ulric Maligi, or Gerry MacNamara

If he could lead us to conference titles and tournament wins, I wouldn't care what history he had. Probably isn't the first choice, but he may be on the radar.

Personally if Tim Miles has the fire in him still and is looking for a long term end to his career like Stew Morrill was, I hope he gets a look.

Good list. I know absolutely nothing about basketball assistants, but these guys all come from successful programs and have coached with some of the absolute best.

This is such a GREAT opportunity for Utah State!!! I have felt we needed to find a better coach for some time but loosing to South Dakota, Boise twice, SDSU, an the tourney loss convinced me Smith isn’t the right guy. Next year was adding up to a mess! Smith isn’t a daisy as Doc Holiday would say. Let’s go get one! Bring back the spectrum magic!!!!

I love the optimism and USU will be fine. We are all disappointed by Smith’s choice however let’s not forget where the program was before he got here. Hopefully the next guy can build on the last three years and exceed that level.

If that is truly your mindset, brace yourself for disappointment. As upset as we all are that Craig is leaving, his success will be very difficult to duplicate

Why do we want Tim Miles?

I just don't see it. He did improve the program at CSU, but still had a losing record when he left. Then in seven seasons at Nebraska he only finished above 10th twice! And it's not like he won the Big 10 and went on a run in the tournament. He made the NCAA tournament twice in 12 seasons between the two schools and didn't make it past the first round either time. I'm not saying he's not the guy, but someone needs to explain to me why he'd be a good option.

I don't totally disagree, but this job isn't a bad one in the conference. We have a raucous crowd, can pay just under 7 figures, and have developed good facilities. Lots of coaches have won here over the years, and the right one could continue.

Getting new players in place will be the top priority, no small task, but possible.

I said a look, not necessarily the job.

Stew Morrill didn't win at high level at CSU either, but he did at USU.

He did manage to win at schools that aren't all that vested in basketball. Maybe he could here and look long term, maybe not. Just thinking out loud with some of these names.

Why aren't people posting potential candidates thinking outside of the box? Nobody ever expected us to get a coach from South Dakota in the first place. I remember thinking to myself, "Who's this guy and how is it possible he can fit in here?"

However, Coach Smith did a good job at Utah State.

So, I have complete trust in Hartwell that he'll find someone else that's off our radar such as Paul Mills at Oral Roberts. Who knows?

I think we should have the new football coaching staff handle basketball too. I like those guys energy and I bet they’d get some transfers from that mystical portal.
