New Transfer Rule starting next year
Starting next season, college football and basketball players can transfer one time before graduating without sitting out a year. If you think there were a lot of transfers this year, hold on tight now that every player essentially gets a free one-time transfer going forward. (Mods - posted here since this forum gets more activity these days, if you feel a cross-post or new post in the football forum would be relevant, please feel free).

It's basically free agency. I like that there is only one transfer before graduation.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
That sucks for mid majors as in really really really sucks. Unless you get a guy like Sam Merrill who has strong loyalty to USU from birth, every good player you have is a risk to leave.
Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
I guess one potential positive outcome may be that coaches recruiting a kid may be more truthful. They can’t just tell the kid anything to get him on campus and then switch gears after the fact without the kid considering a transfer.IBleedAggieBlue wrote: ↑April 14th, 2021, 5:44 pmIt's basically free agency. I’m fine with the one free transfer rule. Coaches don’t fulfill contracts so why should players be forced to.

I get that argument and on most things I'm super pro player. This is one area where I just have to side with the University and all mid majors. If a player is good as a freshman or a sophmore, you better not get that attached to him.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑April 14th, 2021, 6:04 pmI’m fine with the one free transfer rule. Agreed. And as such I wouldn’t waste time recruiting any high schooler that needs development. All the more reason it just makes for USU’s model to be bringing in transfers from p5 schools who want to go somewhere they can get playing time and focus on school & ball.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
I don't think it is the death knell for mid majors..
Over the last few years the rather nondescript MW has managed to grab: Marco Anthony, Kigab, Doutrive, Akot, the Martins, Kendall Stevens, Patterson, Washington, Baker, Jarmarl Baker. Thats just those hot happening destinations of Logan, Boise, Reno and Fresno.
That is not mentioning the 4 guys UNLV just snagged from P5 and the guys SDSU gets all the time.
Players want to play..Some move up some move down.
Maybe the solid play is to grab freshman transfers..You get them for 3 years..

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
This is how I see the game changing. Schools like us should not really recruit HS projects anymore. If they are not going to start for you as a Freshman, place them at a JC to see if they develop. If a project type becomes good for you he will transfer up. If he doesn't, you have to counsel him out. Let the JC find out if they are going to develop. JC's will become the more fruitful recruiting field... and of course P5 guys who are disappointed in playing time.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑April 14th, 2021, 6:33 pmAgreed. Let me guess, coaches can still transfer as often as they want without sitting out a year?

Having said that, I agree that the movement of coaches every year is a big problem for college sports.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
Seems like we are over analyzing this. Everyone will still take the most talented they can get, that won't change much. A few more kids will transfer, you will see a little bit more movement, but they transfer up and they will transfer down. Some will think they can play at a higher level, others will want to get more playing time. It will even out.

New Transfer Rule starting next year
Related to this...by the end of the week the MWC will also get rid of the no transfer to other conference schools policy. They are now the last conference to have such a rule. Athletes will now be able to transfer within the conference. With all of the new changes around player transfer freedom, this was a major lawsuit waiting to happen for the conference.
For me, the new rule changes could be a positive for USU. Yes, we will lose some players moving up, but we are perfectly situated as a high mid-major to attract both those from P5 moving down for playing time or to be a star and those moving up from lower mid-major and likely better JC talent.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
Depends on who. I imagine there will be the Eric Musselman types who are the masters of the portal, but there will also be a lot of mid major teams that will lose their star players over this. I think of Eastern Washington losing Big Sky player of the year Tanner Groves to the portal this year. I don't see Eastern Washington landing a guy of his caliber coming in. Either way, this does forever change college basketball.

Groves is a grad transfer..He put in his time at EW...He likely would have left even without the portal.

The point is the same. He is just an example of a mid major losing their star. This is going to make it harder for mid majors to hold onto great players.

Yep, I just see it as hurting mid majors more, but I hope you are right. The comings and goings of players is going to be crazy. Hope odom learns from musselman and masters the portal.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
And that's how it should be. The good of the kids should be the focus. Kids should be able to transfer to Harvard to pursue being a lawyer after getting straight As at a state school. Kids should be able to do the same for basketball. They're not getting paid and their scholarship is for one year and one year only, subject to renewal. Make it go both ways.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote:The point is the same. He is just an example of a mid major losing their star. Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
Yeah, it is certainly the best and most fair system to players. It just is going to really suck for mid-majors to lose their star players which imo will outweigh the benefit of guys transferring in for most teams. We'll see what happens. It generally changes college basketball forever.QuackAttackAggie wrote: ↑April 14th, 2021, 11:04 pmAnd that's how it should be. The good of the kids should be the focus. Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
In reality the system is already unbalanced with the “best” schools getting the “best” guys.
There may be a slight change initially but everything will go back to equilibrium and it will likely simply be a style change. The big sharks will get the best, and the smaller schools will pick-up what they don’t want.

My favorite players are the guys who are on the Nevada roster at any given time. I suspect you guys will feel the same way about your players. Winning the conference tourney still gets you into the NCAA tourney. If this is going to really hurt mid majors it will hurt all of your conference mates too.
Recruiting is tough for everybody. Retaining players will be tough for everybody.

Re: New Transfer Rule starting next year
Luckily there are many more players then there are spots at the top (P5).
My *guess* of the effect of this change is as follows:
If the goal of a player is to get on a good team then not a lot has changed with this rule change.
If the goal is to be on the best team that will let you play many minutes to showcase your talent then players who turn out to be better than they were expected to be during their recruitment are likely to transfer "up". Any player who unexpectedly improves will be in a good spot, and will likely leave the program they started in.
However, those who are good, but not as good as they were expected to be, will transfer "down" to get more playing time.
In the end a program just has to do the best with whatever cards it is dealt. This will make it more difficult to plan long term I suspect.

The limit on 25 signings per year for football will be a problem. Will changes be made so that schools can still give out 85 total scholarships?
