Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
The three coming in are Patrick Beverley, Rajon Rondo; and Daniel Oturu. Two guards and a center.
At first blush you wouldn’t think this would be to Sam’s benefit but who knows what other roster moves they have in store.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Neither Beverly nor Rondo can hit the broadside of a barn so Sam should have an advantageous trait there. Not sure about the third guy.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
So I think that adding only Rondo won't be a problem for Sam's potential playing time. Rondo, infamously, cannot shoot the rock. Rondo's also injured/upset/resting 99.3573% of the time.
Also, I'm not sure what the Grizz see in Culver. He's the bustiest bust that ever did bust. Would much rather have Bev than Culver and Juancho.

If he does get cut, hopefully he did good enough in summer league to make another roster. I’d love my Raptors to pick him up or the Jazz!

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Obviously I hope Sam makes it but I think he has his work cut out for him. He will have to have a strong camp or some other Grizzly trades to not be a G league guy. It felt bad to me as soon as the Bucks brought in Bryant.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
I've been lurking on a couple of different Grizzly boards and their fans share the same outlook. Not a single comment about being impressed with him and most expect him to be relagated to the G-league or be cut altogether.
I thought there might be some excitement about his recent game(s) but they seem far more interested in the potential of Ziaire Williams... even though he has stunk it up.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
As I understand it, Beverly was traded recently to get some salary cap space. So this is what their projected roster would look like.
Starting Lineup: Ja (PG), Melton (SG) Brooks, (SF), Jackson Jr. (PF), Adams (C)
Bench: Tyus Jones (PG), Desmond Bane (SG), Ziaire Williams (SF), Kyle Anderson (PF) or Brandon Clarke (PF) and Xavier Tillman (C)
3rd Strings: Sam Merrill (PG), John Konchar (SG), Santi Aldama (PF), Daniel Oturu (C)
Two Way: Yves Pons
Conclusion: Sam will be fine, 15 players on roster and one two way is possible for an NBA team.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
i don't see Culver on this list. what are you suggesting will happen to him? he was a lottery pick just two years ago; i don't see them cutting him loose so soon. Culver staying may mean Sammy gets shown the door...AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑August 17th, 2021, 4:53 pmAs I understand it, Beverly was traded recently to get some salary cap space. Killian Tillie just signed a 2-way contract last week as well.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑August 17th, 2021, 5:37 pmi don't see Culver on this list. what are you suggesting will happen to him? he was a lottery pick just two years ago; i don't see them cutting him loose so soon. Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
With the Beverley to the Timberwolves trade, Memphis has to get rid of three players:
Because they are bringing back two players for Beverley, they have to get rid of one of them before they can finalize the trade:
Unfortunately, the math doesn't look like its on Sam's side. Hopefully they are working on another trade that will make room for Sam.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Merrill will be in the G League next year or possibly Europe. I wouldn't begrudge him at all for going the Nico Mannion route and taking more money overseas than playing in the G League. That is if Memphis waives him. If they keep him on the Hustle under contract, obviously that will be what he does.

Sam should try to find a two-way if it’s true those now pay $400,000+

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
The Grizzlies have too many PFs/Cs right now. Aldama sucks. I don't see how they keep him on their roster. G-league is my guess. Culver is an SF, fwiw.

According to Tony Jones the Griz picked up Sam's option so as far as I can tell his 1.5 mil is guaranteed this year no matter what happens.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Jazz should trade Bogey for Kyle Anderson and DeAnthony Melton to help the Grizz out.
Would be a good trade for both teams.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Either way, I hope Sam makes a bunch of money the next ten years playing, then comes back and gets into coaching. I had high hopes for Spencer Nelson, but Craig Smith ruined that too.

I could see that happen. Merrill is a very smart player on top of being a very skilled one.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑August 18th, 2021, 9:51 amEither way, I hope Sam makes a bunch of money the next ten years playing, then comes back and gets into coaching. As for Nelson, Craig Smith was right to bring in his own staff as all coaches should have the right to do.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
Interesting idea. Are either of them known as good defenders? Stat sheets don't say much in that direction, but they'd have to be solid. Bogey isn't an amazing defender, but he's passable. Melton and Anderson aren't as good offensively, so their defense would need to be very good in order to make up for losing Bogey's offense.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑August 18th, 2021, 9:21 amJazz should trade Bogey for Kyle Anderson and DeAnthony Melton to help the Grizz out.

I worry that Melton's 3-pt shooting last year was an aberration. He shot a WAY higher percentage on more attempts than the previous 2 years. It's rare that a 10% jump in one off-season ends up being permanent, but it could be.
I do like Kyle Anderson. He's only got 1 year left on his deal, but I think he could fill the Joe Ingles role once Joe retires. He's not as good of a shooter (very few are), but he can run an offense and is big like Joe (bigger, in fact).

Rondo bought out by the grizz. I don’t think Sam is going anywhere.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
With that trade they are currently at 20 players on the roster. They'll need to cut it down to 15 by the start of the season.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
It's almost futile to make any guesses now since it's a near certainty that there will be more trades to come, but as it stands now:
Yves Pons is on an Exhibit 10 deal and Killian Tillie is on a two-way contract, so they won't be on the 15-man roster.
My best guess is that Sam, Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards, and Daniel Oturu will be fighting for the last spot. I bet Sam could beat out Edwards and Oturu but beating out Dunn would be tough, so here's hoping for some roster-clearing moves in the next few weeks.

So far so good on the prediction, roster is now down to 16. It's probably Sam vs. Kris Dunn for the final spot, though I'm sure Memphis is trying to see if they can get any future second round picks for either of them or maybe some others on the roster (Tyus Jones?) rather than just cutting them.

Re: Another Memphis Grizzlies Trade
FWIW, Dunn looked awful when he was forced into duty for the Hawks in the playoffs. It was a tough spot after missing so much of the season, but he essentially couldn’t dribble. And he could never shoot.
Unless Dunn has gotten back to his pre-injury Bulls form, Sam is pretty clearly the better option.
