UC-Davis

Anyone know anything about UC-Davis? Looks like they won their Exhibition against NAIA William Jessup by 10 points yesterday.

They are the land grant school for California. They're the Aggies, along with us, NMSU, and aTm. The college was established in 1905. They have an endowment of $2 B. They have 40,000 students. They are considered a "public ivy"; in 2021 US News ranked them as tied for 11th best public university in the US.

Does that help?

I know it’s very solid academically. 😁

Sounds like their fans were not too impressed with their team during the scrimmage. Hopefully it’s a nice tune up game for the Richmond game.

If we lose to the Cali-Aggies in the Spectrum we better brace ourselves for a painful season. We should win comfortably. This isn’t the same Davis team as we played a handful of years ago…..neither are we.

If you look long enough they will be older.

One good memory a number of us have of playing there was when we got to listen to their walkie talkies. We could hear them tell them to get something out of Matt's office, give Emily a break, and have pizzas to the concession stand by halftime.

Davis is known for their pressing style and forcing opponents into turnovers. They like to speed you up and make you uncomfortable. This will be a good test for our press break and warm up for our guards. I feel better having Rylan on the court.

We should have a size/height advantage

Found this over on the Big West forums:

UC DAVIS AGGIES
Davis finished fourth in the conference last year, return two All Big West second teamers yet I am having them drop a couple spots from last year. The reason for this is that Les failed to bring in any solid frontcourt players to join the solid Christian Anigwe. PF Kennedy Kohler graduated and all four newcomers are backcourt players. Three other frontcourt players return from last year but none played meaningful minutes nor averaged more than 2.1 ppg or more than 1.5 rpg Additionally, they lose starting guard and third leading scorer Damian Squire who transferred to Portland St.
Arguably, the Aggies have the best back-court in the conference with guards Ezra Manjon and Elijah Pepper, both 2nd team All Big West players last year. Add to this duo 6’5” guard Caleb Fuller who averaged over 10ppg and this is an extremely potent group that will match up with any in the Big West. Christian Anigwe is a solid forward who averaged 8 ppg and 5 rpg for the Aggies last year, his first with the team after two seasons at SJSU. But the Aggies have zero other frontcourt players with meaningful experience. Forwards Aaron Murphy, Caleb McGill and Francesco Borra (who at 6’11”, 255 is more of a center) all were on the roster but rarely played and barely show up in the stats.

Head Coach
Jim Les is in his 11[sup]th[/sup] season at the helm of the Aggies. At Davis he has a record of 135-148, he is 269-293 when you add his 9 years at Bradley. In the 2014-15 season the Aggies won the Big West regular season and played in the NIT after losing in the semifinals. In 2017 the Aggies won their first and only BWT and won their First Four game before being blown out in the first round by #1 seed Kansas.
Prior to Davis, Les had a successful stint at Bradley, his alma mater, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2006. After graduating from Bradley, Les played 7 seasons in the NBA, leading the league in 3 Pt % in the 1990-91 season.

Key Departures
Point Guard Damion Squire, 11.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.9 apg Teams third leading scorer & second leading assists guy. Transferred to Portland St after three years with the Aggies.
Forward Kennedy Koehler 6.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg, Team’s leading rebounder, started all 18 games. Graduated

Top Returnees
Guard Ezra Manjon #5 5’11”, 170 lb. Junior 15.6 ppg, 3.3 apg, 2.5 rpg. 34 mpg
All BW 2[sup]nd[/sup] Team. FOY his first year, Manjon took on a bigger scoring role last season, in part by being more aggressive and getting to the FT line for nearly 5 attempts per game, making 87%. He did struggle from deep, just 23%.
Guard Elijah Pepper #40 6’4”, 200 lb. Junior 14.7 ppg, 5 rpg. 33 mpg.
All BW 2[sup]nd[/sup] Team. Outstanding 3pt shooter, at 45%. Led team with 38 steals. Second leading scorer on 44% from the field.
Guard Caleb Fuller #11 6’5”, 210 lb. Senior 10.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 23 mpg.
Forward Christian Anigwe #4 6’9”, 220 lb, Senior 7.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg 21 mpg. Started 10 games
Played two years at SJSU before playing with the Aggies last year.
Guard Cameron Ba #2 6’3”, 180 lb. Junior 5.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 26mpg
Guard BJ Shaw #20 6’6”, 195 lb. Junior 4.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 13 mpg
Son of Gaucho great Brian Shaw, saw an increased role last year.
.
Newcomers
Guard Kane Milling #0 6’4”, 180 lb. Junior
Transfer from Nevada, son of former Gaucho Kyle Milling. Good 3pt shooter, 37%
Wing Patrick Lambey #1 6’5”, 195 lb. JC transfer Jr
Guard Leo Degbruhl #10 6’2”, 190 lb, Freshman, Seattle, WA
Guard Sione Lose #22 6’4”, 170 lb, Freshman, local kid from Sacramento
Guard Cameron Niles #23 6’5”, 195 lb, Freshman, local kid from nearby Fair Oaks

Probable Starters
Guard Ezra Manjon
Guard Guard Elijah Pepper
Guard/Wing Caleb Fuller
Forward Christian Anigwe

Other Players
Forward Aaron Murphy #3 6’6”, 225 lb. RS Sophomore, 2.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg
Forward Caleb McGill #4 6’7”, 215 lb, Sophomore 7 mpg.
Guard Ade Adebayo #24 6'5" 205 lb Junior, 10mpg
Forward Francesco Borra #55 6’11”, 255 lb, Sophomore 6 mpg

OOC Schedule:
Coach Les believes in his Aggies and has some nice challenges with three teams that were in the tournament last year including @ Elite 8 Oregon State and at Utah State. They host Eastern Washington who gave Kansas all they could handle on November 12. They keep local rivalries going with a neutral site game vs. Sac St and a H&H with UOP.

UC DAVIS (released, full) average NET Quad = 2.50
11/9 @ Utah State (47, 1)

11/12 Eastern Washington (109, 3)
11/17 @ Pepperdine (94, 2)
11/23 vs Sacramento State (251, 4) Golden 1 Center, Sacramento
11/28 Academy of Art (Calif.)
12/1 Pacific (123, 3)
12/4 UC Merced
12/14 @ Oregon State (50, 1)
12/19 @ Pacific (123, 2)
12/22 Portland (321, 4)

UPSIDE/DOWNSIDE
Before taking a closer look I had Davis at the top of the second tier in the BW expecting them to finish fourth based on the strength of their backcourt. But Jim Les, while a good coach, whiffed big time in not landing at least one impact big for the upcoming season. While size isn’t everything (cue the popular rejoinder from The Office) I just don’t see the Aggies being able to compete with the topline frontcourts of UCSB, UCI & UCR. They may also struggle vs. LB, CP & Hawaii as each of these schools possess good frontcourt depth. I project their ceiling at fourth and to get there they’ll need at least one, and probably two, of their frontcourt players that saw limited PT last year step up in a big way.

Upside 4[sup]th[/sup], downside, 8th
Predicted record (overall, BWC): 15-15, 10-10

The Arena: The Pavilion will now be known as the Credit Union Center starting this season. Built in 1977, at 6,003 it is the second largest arena in the Big West, after Hawaii. I do believe beer is served there but a Davis fan can verify this. Regardless, the town of Davis is one of the best college towns in the West, offers a plethora of pre-game options including Parkside, Froggy’s and Burgers & Brew. It’s about a 2.5 mile drive to the arena so plan accordingly.

Guards probably similar to our two starting guards in rj and Jones? If we match up well there, sounds like we should have our way in the paint

Should be a good test of our defense against guards. A glimpse to how our defense will fare against the likes of CSU and Nevada. Like you said though, I think our offense will dominate on the paint with Bean and Horvath slashing for a victory.

Does any school ever spend as much as a dime of their endowment?

They shouldn't. Just the interest from it.
