Cap tip to RJ

Post by ineptimusprime » November 21st, 2021, 6:04 pm

RJ had a quiet ten points, and seems to be finally starting to get a little more comfortable.

I really wanted to see him hit that three at the end. He is still turning it over a bit too much, but I think today was progress for RJ.

Hopefully the next two games will be confidence builders for RJ.

He is playing better. He seems to finally getting comfortable with this team. If he can average in the ten point range that would be huge for this team.

Agreed, would like to see him turn into a Alphonso Anderson type player. Maybe we can expect more from him than that. 🤷‍♂️

Are you referring to Jones?

:) The Fonz comparison earlier in the thread should have smartened me up. That had me scratching my head when I thought we were talking about Rylan.

Did a great job using size and getting a couple nice turn around shots near rim.

As previously mentioned on this board, Coach Odom stated the RJ is typically a slow starter. This does seem to be the case based on his stats broken down by month. I think he has the potential to be a solid impact player.

Nov. (15 games, including this year) 3.7 ppg, 1.7 A, 1.5 RB
Dec. (16 games) 8.2 ppg, 3 A, 3.7 RB
Jan. (20 games) 10.5 ppg, 2.3 A, 4.2 RB
Feb. (19 games) 11.1 ppg, 2.8 A, 4.7 RB
Mar. (7 games) 14.7 ppg, 2.7 A, 4.6 RB

RJ showed improvement today. But he is not the guy I want shooting 3-pointers with the clock running out.

Pretty sure he had the best 3rd point percentage last year out of everyone on our team.

He needs to quit overdribbling and dribbling into a crowd with nowhere to go with the ball.

Yep that is probably the biggest thing for him to improve on. He is getting better, but for sure room for improvement. He will continue to improve.

Clearly but his 3rd point percentage at umbc. 3 point shooting translates. Look at Horvath.
If you take his 3rd point percentage last year it's better than any of the players transfers and all. Unless I misread. It was 40%

Got it. But so far this year he is shooting south of 20%, the worst of all the starters.

Yea he definitely needs to get his feet under him. So does Ashworth. But he has the potential to be one of the best shooters on the team in my opinion. He just doesn't seem to get many open shots from 3 right now.

He was better for sure. I still don't like him dominating the ball on the dribble. It seems everyone is standing around waiting for him to do something when he does that.

I disagree on the open 3’s. From what I have seen his have usually been of the wide open look variety that he has simply failed to hit. He is hitting 75% of his FTs (12 of 16). While that is a good % overall for a team, it is not indicative of an elite shooter. Bean, Ashworth, Miller, and Jones (100%!) are all better from the line than RJ. Sure, it’s early in the season and statistically the dataset is not yet much, but by all appearances he will not pass any of those players as to FT shooting — and I suspect Horvath will also pass him.

It seems to me that RJ’s best ability is not in shooting 3-pointers but rather in driving and posting up smaller defenders underneath and then either finishing the play or kicking the ball to an open shooter whose man has collapsed.

Our whole team needs to be able to hit 3s. I’m in favor of everyone taking enough early in the year so that we can eventually get a big enough sample size to know who should shoot them and who shouldn’t.
