Bairstow improving compared to last year
could very well be an indication of Odom's ability to get alot out of his players compared to Smith's ability.
Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Could be, but I also think Smith miss managed Bairstow.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:19 pmcould very well be an indication of Odom's ability to get alot out of his players compared to Smith's ability.

100% this. Smith has a short leash for Bairstow.

He has to have a starting lineup spot locked up now, right?

Not if Max Shulga has anything to say about it.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:48 pmHe has to have a starting lineup spot locked up now, right?

All the way since the airballed free throw in South Dakota last year I’ve never been able to figure out any of the Shulga hype even a little bitaggies22 wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:51 pmNot if Max Shulga has anything to say about it.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:48 pmHe has to have a starting lineup spot locked up now, right?

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Shulga did very well against Portland State which was his only start. He is also the 2nd youngest player.
Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
I am on the Shulga hype train. Dude is long, has handles and loaded with potential. But his focus and decision making is spotty at best and really inhibits him.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Bairstow and Miller are different players. Miller is a spot up shooter who would fit better in a low-post offense where the ball gets kicked out to the open perimeter shooter.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:19 pmcould very well be an indication of Odom's ability to get alot out of his players compared to Smith's ability.
Bairstow is a slasher who can get his own shot and can get to the rim.
Miller fit better under Smith because the offense went through Queta in the post and with a post offense and when they needed someone to create offense, they gave the ball to Sam.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Any body on the team would look good against Portland State. Shulga almost always looks bad when he plays.
I don’t know if he has got it in him to play well at this level. Don’t get me wrong….I hope he breaks the scoring record, but I just don’t see any bit of a starter in him.

Yes. He was slated to be a starter this season. Ask Ess-ell-bee.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 10:01 pmShulga had hype?aggieborn wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:58 pmAll the way since the airballed free throw in South Dakota last year I’ve never been able to figure out any of the Shulga hype even a little bitaggies22 wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:51 pmNot if Max Shulga has anything to say about it.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:48 pmHe has to have a starting lineup spot locked up now, right?

Bairstow improving compared to last year
Seems like someone on the coaching staff has convinced Bairstow that with his length and quickness he has an advantage over 90% of the guys who are guarding him. He’s now playing with an aggression to get to the rim. Exactly what we need. I believe he also has a decent outside shot that will show up here as he gets more looks. I would like to see him distribute a bit more and get 2-3 assists a game. That may come once teams start to key in on him more and send help his way. He’s such a tough matchup.
I think it’s time to play Bairstow for the bulk of the minutes at the 3 and let Miller be the sharp shooter that comes in off the bench for 10-15 minutes a night as a change of pace. May help keep Miller healthy as well.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Barstow's game look better and his shot, mechanically speaking, looks solid. The shots will drop with more playing time. I'm glad to seem him get big minutes while Miller is out.
His defense is dog $hit. He really needs to use his size advantage and energy on defense. That will come with playing time, as well.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
I think Shulga will eventually be good. As I've said before, if he gets lots of minutes this year it is only because of injury. I'm hoping he develops, gets some confidence and in two years doesn't have to try to prove himself or worry that he is doing too much and can just play the game. I'd be really happy to see a progression like we had with Brito, who looked brutal his freshman year but then found his role, embraced it and was an integral part of the team his junior and senior year.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
I think he is great in the 1-3-1 zone we’ve been pulling out lately. It does seem we have trouble stopping anybody man to man but when we have gone to zone we have looked pretty good. Bairstow out on top of that zone with his length has been a problem for other teams.IBleedAggieBlue wrote:Barstow's game look better and his shot, mechanically speaking, looks solid. Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
He definitely has upside. He is skilled, fast, strong, and has good size. IMO his biggest down sides are his lack of patience, decision making, and teamwork. If he can take care of those things he will do well.Coloraggie wrote: ↑January 13th, 2022, 1:44 pmI think Shulga will eventually be good. He's finally putting the pieces together. We all knew Sean has the talent, height, and athleticism to be really good. He just needed more confidence and playing time.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:19 pmcould very well be an indication of Odom's ability to get alot out of his players compared to Smith's ability.
He might be our go-to player next year.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
He's been the best surprise of the season for me so far. I have said less unkind statements in my head and out-loud about that position. Brock is likely a better defender, but I believe we have more versatility with Bairstow in.

Improving not only. Plays like a much more mature athlete. Wiser, more passionate, more involved, more confident. Happy for him!GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 12th, 2022, 9:19 pmcould very well be an indication of Odom's ability to get alot out of his players compared to Smith's ability.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
As I've been saying all season long. I'd rather have Brock coming off the bench in limited minutes. He'd give you consistency which is critical for bench play.

Re: Bairstow improving compared to last year
Brock Miller and "consistency" don't belong together in the same sentence. But I agree a few minutes off the bench as a 3 point threat would work well.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑January 14th, 2022, 4:53 pmAs I've been saying all season long.
