Walker question answered

Farris had been practicing well. The coaches gave him a shot to see how he would respond in a real game.

"James Walker, the freshman point guard, didn't play because Farris did. It remains to be determined if Farris has done enough to earn the back-up role for Wednesday's game at Denver. But coaches love players who are ready when called upon, and Farris proved his worth on Saturday night."

I will root for a player like Farris anyday. First he is a walk-on
and is paying his own way. Story is he did not have the grades
to qualify out of high school and evidently he has put in the time
in the classroom to make grades.
His uncle was a football player here in the seventies and went on
to be a prominent sports trainer in the Bay Area. He worked with Jerry Rice
and many other bay area baseball and football players.
EJ has a ways to go but for his first real game he played well and most importantly
did not make any mistakes.
Good Job EJ

I don't mind having a serviceable third PG when needed. It will be good for Walker to have Farris pushing him for minutes. These young guys need a little competition to make them better. This will work itself out in the end. If Walker can't keep his minutes over a walk-on then that is his own fault.

Too many athletes today rely upon their athletic abilities to get them through. When the competition catches up they don't know how to push themselves to get better. A good example of this is Vince Young.

Edit: I am really struggling lately :noidea:

Its Stew's team and he can do what he wants. However I think you need to be careful in playing a kid 15 minutes a game then dropping it down to 0.

I love Walker's potential but other than show off his amazing speed he hasn't really contributed a whole lot. In fact I would say that Farris did more in his 5 minutes than Walker has done in 44. Here is the comparison of our PGs:

If Farris is the better player, there's no complaint with him getting the minutes. The only thing that could sting in this, given that Walker rises to the challenge, is that Walker may end up essentially losing his freshman year of eligibility when he perhaps ought to have been considered for a redshirt. Maybe he'll end up redshirting next year like Medlin is doing this year.

Walkers mom needs to talk to Pooh's dad. I would think Pooh's situation is similar. Culture, playing time...... Maybe not quite as high of incoming potential as Walker, but the rest is similar. Pooh averaged 27 ppg as a senior @ Federal Way.

I'm wondering if young Herr Walker needs a redshirt year to get ready. He could still pull it off.

You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Right now I'm wanting to give Walker a try at his natural position, seeing as how our wings are struggling. I think Pooh, Green, and Newbold get tired with how much they work on defense....maybe throw in a 4th player to spread out minutes?

In other news, Marcel Davis, a highly rated HS PG from American Fork who will be attending USU in 2012, had 15 pts, 8 boards, and 4 assists in American Fork's win over Springville. Also, Sam Orchard, a 6'1" PG from Highland HS, who was 1st team all state last year as a junior, averaging 16.5 per game, is very interested in playing for USU as a member of the 2011 class.
