Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
The story goes (and it has some plausibility IMO), Musselman is from Socal and wanted to get back to SoCal and wanted the USC job. He also knew the Andy Enfield had an affinity for the Dallas area and was also on the hot seat/not happy at USC.
Muss's sister is married to the biggest SMU donor. They led him to believe if he got SMU's head coach fired, Muss would be interested in the job, so the SMU donor went and got SMU's head coach, Rob Lanier, fired.
Muss then passed on the SMU job and their next call was sure enough, to Andy Enfield at USC. Muss then took the USC job.
Muss basically manipulated his own brother in law into firing a coach they otherwise wouldn't have fired had they thought Muss would pass on that job.
Then Arkansas swings and misses on their top 2 choices (Chris Bear, Jerome Tang) and somehow lands their 3rd choice, John Calipari.
What a sport.

It has begun. The NIL for the big schools is lining up for those Kentucky players.
There is a Kentucky player that we should pursue if he hits the portal.

That's wild and some master manipulation by Muss. Crazy how quickly Arky fans turned on him after one bad season.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 8th, 2024, 9:51 amThe story goes (and it has some plausibility IMO), Musselman is from Socal and wanted to get back to SoCal and wanted the USC job. Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
Obviously Dan Hurley is going to be KY's first call, but he'd be crazy to take it. He's got a good thing going at UConn. I'd stay away from Kentucky if I was already competing for National Championships regularly.

Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
The thing I don't get about USC hiring Muss is that he hasn't been that great in the SEC. He has a losing conference record in 3 out of his 5 seasons there. USC has big money and is moving to the Big10. Muss seems like a pretty mediocre hire when you have that much hiring power.

Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
One name swirling around in the upcoming coaching carousel is Jamie Dixon out of TCU. I’m hoping he moves on and JaKobe Coles enters the portal. This guy plays off the bench for TCU and could be a star in the MW as a stretch 4 or 5. I was very impressed with him in our tourney game.

At least Musselman will be in sunny Southern California so he will be able to take his shirt more often and wave it to the crowd. He will be right at home.

Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
He also has a Sweet Sixteen and two Elite Eights in those five years. We saw on this board that many fans think that games in March are the only games that matter and a coach's record in the first 30 games of the season don't count.jpswensen wrote: ↑April 8th, 2024, 12:14 pmThe thing I don't get about USC hiring Muss is that he hasn't been that great in the SEC. Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
Cal's walking into a blank slate. Arkansas doesn't have a single returning scholarship player. I'm sure Cal will be able to restock with a lot of talented players, but it's nice to see the bigger programs also deal with mass player exodus when a coach leaves.

Word is Drew is gonna be the next kentucky coach. I wonder if Pope would have any interest in the Baylor job if it were to open up

If Pope goes to Kentucky, we have a chance to pick up BYU player(s) and/or recruit(s).

Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
You guys will laugh at something a guy I work with told me. He tried to tell me that Kentucky is going to hire Craig Smith as their next coach.
This guy I work with is the same guy that was first telling me that Jason Shelley would have beat out Colombi for the starting job if he stayed. Then would each week be telling me Jason would do better the next game. Then the day we kicked him off the team, before I could even send him the text telling him it was official we kicked him off the team, he texted me first asking me if I was the one that made it happen, knowing how frustrated I was with him even though it was pretty much a representation of how we all felt.

Re: NAR: Coach Cal to Arkansas
For one thing, first round losses lately is what they were upset about with Calipari. But Pope has a goose egg of NCAA wins as well. Maybe Kentucky has an understanding of how difficult the honor code is to work around at BYU.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑April 11th, 2024, 2:39 pmAD really striking out if they have to turn to Pope. BYU losing Pope would be big for us because of the Utahn and Idaho pipeline of basketball.

If Pope left, would Mark Madsen be interested in BYU? I'm sure he'd be their 1st call and he's a better coach than Pope, if you ask me. (Not to mention being in the Big XII rather than the absurd West Coast of the ACC.)
