2024 USU Hoops Coaching Carousel

Post by aggies22 » April 11th, 2024, 11:17 am

After assessing how things have transpired the past two weeks and trying to do as much research as I can, this is my PREDICTION as to who stays, and who is going. If at any time I have reason to believe that my prediction needs to be altered I will do so.

Danny Sprinkle - Head Coach at Washington
Andy Hill - Assistant Coach at Washington
Eric Brown - Will remain at Utah State
Chris Haslam - Assistant Coach at Oregon State
Johnny Hill - Assistant Coach at Illinois-Chicago
Xavier Bishop - Grad assistant at Washington

2024-25 Staff
Jerrod Calhoun - Head Coach
Ben Asher - Assistant Coach
Eric Brown - Assistant Coach
Eric Daniels - Assistant Coach
Manny Robinson - Assistant Coach
Paul Molinari - Director of Basketball Operations

Hoping to see Haslem and Dixon, but suspect that if that were happening we would know.

Does brown staying potentially help keep the pg from Portland?

Yes BUT it's not a given. It also helps with Wynott.

Imagine if there is an assistant that we were looking at with the last name of Mason then have to decide between Mason and Dixon
That would be a line to cross.

I really don't want to set off a firestorm here, but I expect Calhoun will be looking for an African American assistant to provide the type of support to the African American players that he can't.

Nope. He has a new gig. It's just not for me to disclose where.

I thought so. I was going to post his name but thought I'd better hold up. He will be key in recruiting Stephan Swenson.

Did he have a spot here and choose this other opportunity or did he not have a spot here at USU

That I'm not 100% sure on yet. I would say his move is a step up in perception and a step down in level of play.

Haslem should go back to the Big Sky at a higher position if he wants to be a future head coach.

Craig Smith trying to get the Trifecta of Brits. Can't do any real recruiting on his own.

Apparently he and Molinari were teammates at Winthrop back in the day. He also worked for Calhoun at Fairmont beside Youngstown. These 3 have some long time connections so it’s not surprising he’s bringing them along.

Because he was considered to be a highly regarded assistant when he was on Odom's staff anyway, we've heard nothing but good things since then and his relationship with players, and him and his family love Logan & USU. I mean, they stayed here because they loved it so much.

It'd be nice to see a guy like that be able to be a part of USU.

I haven't heard anything since Odom didn't hire him and no one else did, just people saying we should hire him all the time. I'm glad they love Logan and USU though.

Would not be a good fit for this staff and their approach. Dixon is quite different from what Calhoun has stated he wants in his coaching staff.

I don't get all the love for Dixon.

I would have thought as a moderator, you would frequent this board more often. Welcome back!

I've read it all, I just don't count a bunch of guys on the message board wanting him on staff as anything resembling a legitimate qualification abd was wondering if there is anything beyond the echo chamber effect here.

What’s the deal with Austin Hansen? He was Smiths assistant coach and has stuck around in the valley. Is he an option for an assistant coaching position?

I wouldn't count on it.
