Don't get the player hate
I can understand the hate when a coach like Smith, Sprinkle, or Odom leave after a short time here, especially when they don't really embrace the university or the fans, but I have a hard time understanding why people throw so much hate on players that had a good-great relationship with the university/fanbase and leave when a good opportunity arises. Great is the most recent example- by all accounts he really enjoyed his time here, the fanbase loved him, and everybody saw it coming when he announced he was leaving (really hard to fault a kid for leaving for $2 mil). Why does everyone want to see him fail? I don't consider myself a Great groupie by any means, but I also don't get why everybody seems to hate the kid. I hope the best for him. I'm fine with mocking Washington for losing, but that is more for Sprinkle than for Great.
As for players like Collette, screw that guy.

I wish him the best. More power to him for getting the largest NIL payday in the history of college basketball. Made me proud that Utah State helped him get into prominence.

Re: Don't get the player hate
I think some people like to laugh at Great's poor showings at Washington more cause of the Washington boosters getting a poor ROI and less cause of USU being where he was at last year. I don't think as many people hate guys who leave for reasons other than $$$ as long as they end up somewhere other than Utah or BYU.

Re: Don't get the player hate
I didn't think anyone is mad at Great. We probably wish we could have kept him but that's life in this new world. The frustrating ones happen when a guy leaves 3 days before the season starts, or it pretty clearly looks like tampering. Especially when they wind up at another Utah school.

Re: Don't get the player hate
Another reason people bring it up is to point out the grass isn’t always greener. I think most fans understand it’s a business decision, but when you decide it’s better to move on and it doesn’t work out fans will use that as further evidence that transferring often doesn’t work out like you hope. Those teams paying big NIL$$$ are brining players in to compete for a spot, and probably one you have the inside track on at USU.

Great is/was a fine player. My enjoyment is not his poor start but the fact UW spent so much money for a bball player. Kind of like the TDS and their ‘lottery’ player.

Re: Don't get the player hate
I watched about 3 minutes of their game last night. I thought they had lost more than one game (before last night) based on the comments of this board. Great seemed fine, pretty typical for him. He always flopped around, had lazy streaks, and turned the ball over. He also made a nice play. I then watched Elf for the 10th time this holiday season.

i'm with you, @NAggsty Butler
i think people are trying to vent their frustration that we had such a talented player and coach but couldn't retain them here. makes me feel powerless and helpless to elevate USU's program profile for hte long term, but i can't speak for others.
but it doesn't come across that way to me.
@NVAggie elf? i'm more of a home alone man, myself. also 8 bit Christmas has been rising in popularity at our house.

I don't hate Great, and I don't blame him for doing what he did. That doesn't mean I can't take a little joy in the team he went to struggling.

Re: Don't get the player hate
It's hard to see a Great player or even coach leave your program, but at the same time how could a player or coach not leave if they are being offered Monopoly money to play somewhere else. It still hurts though. I am torn because I want them to succeed but I don't want their investment to pay off.....tricky subject.

Re: Don't get the player hate
I'll tell you exactly why I'm not a fan: I'm an Aggie. If we put in the effort and money to build your career and give you a shot, you better show some damn loyalty. That's for starters. In Great's case, however, I'm agnostic towards him, but my enmity towards all things Washington peaked when those awful little girls on their soccer team did something unforgivable that I won't mention here after their game against us last month. With no repercussions whatsoever. I'll gleefully welcome anything bad that comes that school's way for years to come.
On a general note, I'm not a guy that is comfortable with the pedestals we place athletes upon. When I see grown men wearing the jerseys of these kids, idolizing them, becoming star-struck and elbowing actual kids to the side just to get close to these players it makes me want to puke in shame. When we get grown men asking event staff to move out of the way so they can high five the players as they go into the tunnels, it's ample evidence of how weak some of the men in our country have become. It's absolutely insane. If you want to understand what ruined college athletics, start with those dudes. They were the ones paying for access under the table, which begat NIL. Is there more than a handful of NIL contracts that actually result in any profit for the donor? What an awful business decision, just to get access to a kid that is deft with a ball. I've never understood it and I think it's pathetic. We'll win without either of those groups.
Anyhow, I hope that answers your question from one perspective.

I was at the Washington soccer game. One thing that did happen was at the end of the game, the girls ran over to the north end of the field where there is the group of the Hurd students in the bleachers and waved good bye talking trash that they won.

This doesn't bother me. I'd do the same in that scenario. You go on the road and beat a higher ranked/seeded team in an elimination game, you've earned the right to talk trash. Just don't plant your flag at midfield. That's going too farGameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑December 5th, 2024, 8:57 amI was at the Washington soccer game. And I'm sure that the Hurd said nothing but nice things about the Washington players up until that point. I don't have a major problem with players talking a little trash to fans after a road win, particularly if the fans have been harassing them during the game. But it sounded like Ahbye was hinting that it was something worse than that.Aggie702 wrote: ↑December 5th, 2024, 9:12 amThis doesn't bother me. I'd do the same in that scenario.
