David Price

Post by Yossarian » December 1st, 2015, 5:31 pm

So, the Red Sox just signed David Price to a 7-year, $217M contract. That is $31M per year. For a while, the going rate for a top tier pitcher worked out to about $1M per win (i.e., a pitcher that could be expected to win 15 games in a year was demanding about $15M/year), now it seems that the bar has been set for an elite pitcher to demand about $1M per START! And I don't put price in the same company as some of the other, more dominant pitchers. Athletes' salaries are nuts. I should have invested more time in my southpaw son's pitching training.

Boston has joined the Yankees atop the "too rich for their own good" pile for this Orioles fan.

Price's best years are probably over in the next 2-3 years.

David Price does not turn the Red Sox into a contender. Toronto, New York & Baltimore are all too good.

So the owners have to spend more money on the players. Good for the players. This just goes to show just how much the owners are making. With salary caps in the other sports, you have to wonder just how much more money the owners are making and how much the players are not getting. I do like the parity though that comes from the salary caps.

David Price is the Peyton Manning of the MLB, can't win big games.

I think it also shows that, contrary to what many believe, baseball is not a dying sport in the U.S. I can't imagine Owners would enter into these types of contracts if they were running a business that is struggling.

It should be clear by now that the best way to build an MLB team is to gut the roster, acquire young talent, develop young talent, and sprinkle in some big contracts - if needed - to plug any holes. The Royals and the Astros are prime examples.

The Red Sox are getting perilously close to being on my list of eternally-despised teams: BYU, Lakers, Cowboys, Yankees...

MLB is incredible to watch live! The MLB ticket utility:price ratio is off of the charts! I got 1st base side, 4 rows up, tickets to a Rockies game towards the end of the season for $7 per ticket.

I would like for a Red Sox fan to explain why cheering for them is any different than cheering for the Yankees at this point.

I am surprised you paid that much for a Rockies ticket late in the season 918, that train wreck was finished by June. I am a Rockies fan since 93, and would love to see them turn it around.

Go Sox! So I guess the Diamondbacks are the Yankees of the west since they signed Greinke to a huge deal?

No, the Sox make a habit of it. Az signing him was the first big one they did in a long time.
