Jazz playoff picture

Post by dogie » April 7th, 2018, 11:12 pm

I’m not a huge NBA fan (anymore), but I have been taken in by the end of the regular season in the Western Conference.

I’d like to know if there has ever been such a close race among so many teams for playoff position so near the end of the season in any of the major leagues.

I’m not sure I have all the facts straight, but 1.5 games separate the #4 team (Utah) from the #8/9 teams (Minnesota and Denver), with everyone having just two or theee games to play. None of those teams (including the Jazz) has clinched a playoff berth yet, so one sorry team among that group will be left out.

The Jazz, with three games to play, could end up finishing 9th and missing the playoffs entirely. On the other hand, they will move up to 3rd and will finish first in their division if they win the final three games.

It's very intriguing this year to say the least. I haven't been a huge fan of the NBA for some time now but I love the way the Jazz have been playing. Rudy is awesome. It's been fun to watch him play his defense.

A win today clinches playoff spot. Really quite crazy. Really unfortunate that golden state or Houston didn't win yesterday. Both would have if they hadn't something to play for.

Pretty amazing the way the Jazz are playing. This might be the best stretch of basketball they have ever played in franchise history over a 35 game period. I doubt Stockton and Malone even went 30-5 over a 35 game period like this team has a chance to do with 2 more wins.

If you would have told me when the Jazz were 19-28 that the Jazz would have gone 25-10 to close the year I would have thought you were crazy. That would not have been good enough to make the playoffs. Instead they are 28-5 right now with 2 to play and that is what was needed to make the playoffs.

I have never enjoyed the NBA more than I have the last few years. The Stockton and Malone era was great as a Jazz fan, but the overall talent level in the league is miles ahead of where it used to be and the style of play is more appealing now IMO.

At 19-28 the Jazz were probably a loss or two away from a major selloff at the deadline and a possible dive into tank mode. Now they are two wins away from the #3 seed. Unbelievable stretch of basketball.

Yep and they were very close to being 19-30. They had an overtime win at Detroit and buzzer beater at Toronto following being 19-28. The season could have turned into a rebuild instead it has turned into one of the best turnarounds in nba history if not the best. Seriously I doubt any team in NBA history that started the year 19-28 has finished the way the Jazz have since that point. Maybe someone could look it up, but I would be surprised.

The talk shows were debating whether the Jazz should tank or keep trying.

I think they have had three other comparable 35-game stretches in franchise history according to a graphic in the game a few nights ago. Two of them we three losses if I recall correctly.

Yes but were the previous winning stretches preceded by so much suck? Has any team both sucked this bad, and been this good in the same season?

I remember the 96-97 season they went 64-18 and they had a 15 game winning streak late in the year, so maybe that time. Still a remarkable achievement. 30-5 is an incredible run and do it after starting so poorly has probably never been done in nba history.

The Heat did something very similar last year.

http://www.nba.com/article/2017/10/02/o ... wo-seasons

30-11 in their last 41. Not as good as this year's Jazz and in the Eastern conference, but still...

Now if only it could translate into winning a round or two!!!

It’s amazing how hard they’ve worked to go 18 games back in January to 17 games back in April from the Western Conference leader.

Does that effectively state that we have outperformed every team in the NBA since January? Including the Western Conference leader? I believe that it does.

I think the Jazz are guaranteed 3rd or 5th seed after the beat down they gave last night (I know it is the end of the season, and GS doesn’t really care, but beating someone by 30 always feels good)

Andy Larsen breaks it down pretty clearly in this: https://www.ksl.com/article/46297636/th ... jazz-by-40

It basically is like this:
If the Jazz win, it's the third seed
If the Jazz lose and Memphis wins, it's the fourth seed
If the Jazz lose and OKC wins, it's the fifth seed.

The Jazz opponent is more complicated, but it's most likely OKC.

If OKC loses they are guaranteed Houston in the first round. If they win, we will play them in the first round no matter what.
