New Mexico to cut athletic programs

Sounds like New Mexico will be trimming their athletic programs. I don't know how this will affect us, but they are conference-mates and this could lead to a slightly weaker conference.

Probably no effect that we will feel. The NCAA requires a school to sponsor a minimum of 7 men's sports and 7 women's sports to qualify as division 1. USU sponsors 8 men's sports (counting cross country, indoor track and outdoor track each separately, which hardly seems fair, but meets the rules) and 10 women's sports (again, counting cross country, indoor and outdoor separately), for a total of 18 sports (for those of you from Clarkston). New Mexico sponsors 22 sports. Cutting 4 sports, with all the associated coaching and support staff, and the travel savings, should just about get them where they ned to be. They'll just be down to our level.
