Boise president

BSU getting a new president. As we well know a new prez can have a dramatic effect on the athletic dept. Not an overwhelming list of candidates. For the good of the MW I hope boise keeps it going.

Considering sports put the University on the map I would be surprised if the board of Trustees (or equivalent) over looked that aspect.

Agreed. Without Athletics what do they have? They have to be smart enough to know that.

None of these guys have a ton of athletics experience. That's my point.

One thing funny is the guy who was a finalist when we had an opening didn't make the cut for them. I looked at the article to see if he was one of the finalists, which he isn't.

That's putting it mildly. Academically, Boise State has barely moved on from its junior college days. It's a football program with a Potemkin university attached.

I'm not sure how significant this is, but US News doesn't have Boise St ranked all that far behind us. I'm actually a little disappointed with where we are.

US News rankings are kind of questionable. IIRC, they end up largely being a popularity contest with dodgy methodology that values rep among a certain group of people more than anything else. ie, if you ask a bunch of E. Coast elites if USU or BSU is better, they'll probably just call it a tossup. "State school in the flyover? Who knows?"

At least Utah is an actual state.

This is spot on. It's hard to get "apples to apples" data, but looking at Wikipedia, in 2016 Boise State awarded doctoral degrees to 18 graduates, and 670 masters. The last time I looked, they had 3 doctoral programs, and I believe they were all EdD programs. By comparison, Utah State has 83 masters programs and 41 doctoral programs. Our research budget is larger than Washington State University's research budget. Boise State's research budget wouldn't buy our paperclips.

Edit: A better listing is the Carnegie Rankings http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/. Carnegie lists Utah State as "Doctoral University, Higher Research Activity", the second highest ranking. Boise State is listed as "Doctoral University, Moderate Research Activity", the third highest ranking. University of Utah is listed as "Doctoral University, Highest Research Activity". BYU is in the same ranking as Utah State, which surprises me. I thought they would have been in the same class as Boise State, and I'm not being ironic. They have marginal graduate programs.

Trivia fact: Idaho is the only state with two capitols.

Olympia and Salt Lake.
