As they have laid off about 1/3 of their remaining staff. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/05/14/ ... offerings/
Although I'm sure they will continue to report any salacious stories

They'll just continue to run the standard issue press release that Wade Denniston writes for the Athletic Department.

So what you are saying is their coverage of USU sports will remain the same.ViAggie wrote: ↑May 14th, 2018, 6:59 pmAs they have laid off about 1/3 of their remaining staff. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/05/14/ ... offerings/

The next time I see Wade, I'll ask him if he makes any money for newspapers running those?

Re: SL Trib - we'll likely never see another sports article from them
I like reading the trib articles even for other teams. I miss the hay day when Tony Jones was writing about USU (even Kyle Goon did a decent job) but honestly there is so much available now that wasn’t there just a short time ago. It’s hard to compete when there is twitter, multiple message boards and online blogs like MW wire that are cheap to run.ViAggie wrote:As they have laid off about 1/3 of their remaining staff. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/05/14/ ... offerings/

When all it’s all over I don’t think you get as deep if reporting into a program, but there is much broader coverage. One of the articles I remember the trib put out when GA first got the job was about the transformation of the summer conditioning program where the players were making these huge leaps from what was a terrible conditioning program before he arrived. I was still on the fence because I had been fooled before, but I bought in a little bit the first game I saw them play in person. The team looked like football players, and I remember Borel looked like he had gone through three years worth of training over one summer.

Interestingly the two sport writers that got cut yesterday were the Utah and BYU beat reporters...Lynn Worthy and Jay Drew. I think the time of the college beat reporter is over.
I really miss the days when we had the great coverage Tony Jones and Jared Eborn provided.

Just before being let go Jay Drew tweeted a congratulations to his daughter that was graduating from USU. Of course he added that she had earned a degree in mediocre football watching. What a douche.

While I am sad for everyone else, I am ecstatic to dance on the grave of Jay Drew's career at the Tribune. From personal experience, he always had an agenda and little respect for the truth if it didn't align with that agenda.
Good riddance to bad rubbish for Mr. Drew

Nothing will change. You can't fall off the floor.
I read the Trib sports page online every day, and learn about 1/10 as much about the Aggies as I do from a few well placed individuals on this board, some friends in the valley, and social media.
Even before this latest shakeup at the Trib, anyone who was expecting the Salt Lake papers to give decent coverage to the Aggies should explain why it would make sense for them to do it. They didn't do it that well even when they were the only game in town -- much less reason for them to worry about it in the digital age. Our fan base in their market area is probably 1/10 that of the downstate sisters.

Re: SL Trib - we'll likely never see another sports article from them
Taking this a step further - how much longer do you think any sports reporting department at a newspaper can last? Twitter, message boards, and the like always "scoop" the newspapers. Even if there are some half-facts, the gist of the news gets out long before the newspaper covers them. The only thing the newspapers are good for now are the in-depth player profile pieces or historical "documentary" type pieces the write. They no longer serve as a "news" source - word of mouth and social media have replaced them.OKAggie wrote: ↑May 15th, 2018, 10:19 amNothing will change. You can't fall off the floor.

Re: SL Trib - we'll likely never see another sports article from them
I think sports reporters are slowly being compensated more and more based on social media presence. They have some tools and access that normal fans on Twitter do not have. I think the Tribune is moving this way, and they will still exist well into the future, but cuts were bound to happen.Yossarian wrote: ↑May 15th, 2018, 11:03 amTaking this a step further - how much longer do you think any sports reporting department at a newspaper can last? When they are so biased with their reporting it is a wonder they are doing as well as they are. Regrettably print newspapers are a dinosaur on the way out.

Re: SL Trib - we'll likely never see another sports article from them
In fairness to the Tribune or any other news outlet, what do we want them to report? “Congratulations to the softball team for another first round exit from the MWC tourney!”
“News” by its very nature should give info not otherwise known and pique interest. What aspect of USU sports right now would satisfy those two elements AND drive increased readership and advertising revenue by the news outlet to warrant the investment of time and $ to do so? I couldn’t think of anything either.

They don’t have a conference tourney in softball for the MWC.

This is why many organizations are putting out their own content. They are hiring reporters and producing their own videos and programming.

Re: SL Trib - we'll likely never see another sports article from them
They have every right to. I was simply responding to the comment that the Trib will never cover USU again. The Torrey Green trial begins in the fall I believe and the Trib will be there. As will many other news media outlets. I would rather have no coverage, than have USU and the football program in the news for something like this. I wish Torrey had made better choices, used some self control and never put himself this situation and allegedly harmed those women. No women should have to go through what Torrey is accused of.
