Love it. I saved this pic for posterity.

I also find it hilarious that they have interjected BSU as a "rival" over these past few years. It's like they hope to ride the coat tails of the Bronco's success by placing themselves on the same plane. So they've played football for 100 years and in that time they've had 8 total matchups against BSU, losing 6 of those? Hardly a "rivalry".

But hey, they have practically the exact same win percentage against the Utes and people have been buying that as a rivalry for decades now.

BYU is guilty of rivalry appropriation. Boise State is one of our rivals, not theirs.

How on earth can their fans consider Boise State a rival?! They have played 8 times in total spread out over only the past 15 years. Their record is only 2-6 against Boise State. Hardly the makings of a "rivalry".

To be fair, they also consider themselves to be a P5 program, so you can't really trust their judgment.

They have self-awareness issues down at byu-provo. They are 5-3 against us over the last 8 years and consider it lopsided and not a rivalry, and yet Boise is a rivalry at 2-6? Sounds like an aspirational rivalry to me at best. In addition they have lost 7 straight to Utah...and yet somehow they think they are superior to all of these teams. Seems like someone is compensating for something.

No, for my point of view, I don't care what they think is a rivalry and what isn't, I just look forward to water the grass in Provo with cougar tears on October 5th.

Is this a joke?

If not, in what year does BYU think they will be able to accomplish these goals? Will Sitake be around to see any of these goals accomplished?

Unless their program gets picked up by a power conference no one would ever be around to see all these goals accomplished (and probably not even then). I think BYU hit it’s possible peak a decade back, independence does not suit them well.

Achievable goals:

Beating USU; and
Bowl eligibility.

No way they can accomplish any of the others, especially the last.

And the achievable goals may well be beyond their reach.

You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

I think we are what stands between them and bowl eligibility. They will probably be either 6-6 or 5-7. The hard will be way too hard for them and the easy will be easy enough that they shouldn't lose.

I am afraid that this game will mean more to them than us this year and they will be motivated enough to win it. This will be their super bowl this year.

I think their peak was 1977-1996. 1996 was the last time BYU played in a major bowl game (really the only time they did) and made noise near the top of the national rankings (ranked 5th in both polls after the bowl games). Bronco did get them back into the top 25 regularly, but they certainly did not reach the levels they occasionally reached during the 1977-1996 period.

When you look at those goals and consider the game with USU affects the first 3 in a very direct way, it is no surprise that it is their super bowl. I don't believe they have a more important game on their schedule.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Utah State game effectively decides the fate of Sitake for this exact reason. USU is what probably stands between BYU-Provo and going bowling. Not to mention that losing it could push them to 1-5 and the wheel can come off at that point.

USU will have two weeks off before going to Provo and BYU will only have 6 days of rest after a road trip to Washington to play the Huskies. I definitely hope the wheel comes off. 1-5 would be nice but I'm hoping that they're 0-6 after we play them.

I recently read a tweet from a BYU fan saying that if USU beats BYU, then Sitake should be fired. Would really hurt to shoot ourselves in the foot like that. Almost worth letting BYU win that game if it means Sitake gets to keep the program in a downward spiral for another year. ;)

It wasn't long ago that we were howling because USU didn't hire Sitake. Is he actually a sucky coach or is BYU just in a hopeless position?

Some guys just aren't meant to be head coaches. Sitake is a great coordinator and an even better recruiter but hes filled his coaching staff with guys that can't coach worth $hit. That's great for us! When we win 10 games and Coach Wells gets poached and takes Keith Patterson with him, hiring Sitake to coach our defense would be fantastic.

My neighbors kid, who wanted to play for USU, plays for BYU as USU had zero interest in him. Anyway, I asked him about their team, attitude, etc. on Sunday. He told me the new coaches have completely changed their attitude, work ethic and how they practice. He thinks they have the talent and with their new focus and energy they will have have a good year. Good is a relative term but he felt confident they would do noticeably better than last year.

There have been a couple of threads on Cougarboard about the game. I think some of their fans are waking up to some of the facts mentioned above (over the last 8 years, the series is pretty close, closer than the Utah rivalry; this game could decide their bowl eligibility; they'll be coming off four tough games and a short week, and we'll be coming off a bye). Some of them actually sound rational (worried).
