AP Poll is a sham

How on planet earth does BYU (a 4-9 team last year) beat a team with a few AP votes in week 1 and end up eking their way to 3 AP poll votes? Something is fishy near Utah Lake.

Early polls are super reactionary and due to early season expectations. I am not too worried about who is getting votes unless they are ranked.

Yea seems screwy, but another question in my mind is how is SDSU STILL reviving votes in the AP poll?

My guess is some one thinks too highly of stanford and so SDSU had a decent enough showing that they respect them.

I'm impressed by Hawai'i, so far, but still a bit surprised to see them getting votes.

I think Fresno will make their way into the top 25 in a few weeks. They may be close depending on how they play at Minnesota this year ( I think they win).

As for BYU, I thought Arizona looked like a pile of garbage. BYU's offense is certainly improved, but not by as much as BYU fans think. Arizona's defense was dismal. BYU's defense is probably on par with prior years, so pretty decent. I guess we'll see though.

I love that Utah is sitting at #26 right now. I mean, they'll go 7-6 this year, but the PAC-12 is just THAT GOOD. I guess you gotta fill the rankings with somebody this early in the season.

There are always voters that show that they have no business voting. This week Jonny Miller dropped Ohio State from #5 on his ballot to #25. There doesn't appear to be any reasoning behind it. Teams also get a lot of credit for their history. USU nearly beats MSU and the national guys see it as Michigan State letting up against a bad team...BYU beats a mediocre Pac-12 team and get's a ton of credit because of their past success.

They beat a pac 12 team that a lot of people were high on and shut down a heisman candidate. It makes sense to me :noidea: .

And as far as what they did last year, I'm one of the people who wants a smaller emphasis placed on "what happened last year" with rankings. I hate preseason rankings and wish they wouldn't come out until after week 3.

What will Utah State's record need to be in order to receive votes in the poll?

If Usu covers the spread against NMSU and Michigan State rolls against ASU, I expect a vote in next week’s poll. If it doesn’t quite go like that, but USU is 3-1 after Air Force, I would expect some votes at that time.

I happen to think/hope MSU does well. I was sitting close at the game and was pretty impressed with their athletes I think they’re a good team.

I think we will need to go at least 4-1, but possibly 5-1 to get a vote. Depends on if BYU crashes and burns or keeps winning.

I think 3-1 with big wins in all 3 gets us in the 1 vote area. Win v BYU and we start getting 20-40 points. Beat UNLV and Wyo and we start getting close to poking our nose in (assuming that we are winning by double digits plus in each.) Obviously it depends what the rest of the nation does and our opponents look like.

I am glad that Hawai'i is looking good and fun but S&P+ has them at 119. Victories over 112 and 105. Small sample size but neither win was by *that much.* Their defense is abysmal. Offense looks good but they haven't played anyone good yet. I think that they make a bowl and look good but I'm not afraid of them yet.

That’s because games from last year are still counting and they were horrible last year. After game 4 all of last season’s games will have dropped off.

Actually he is keeping last years games in all year long. Going down to 15%. But the big hit that CSU has taken and the big jump from BYU shows that it can still be overcome. Staying sub 100 isn't a big deal right now but its not great.

Given that MSU & BYU laid an egg, I think we'll be lucky to get a few votes if have won through byu and are sitting at 4-1.

Agreed. Probably depends on the manner in which we win the next three games. Our schedule doesn't do us many favors for getting noticed. Had we beaten MSU it would be a different story.
