Big day in Pullburgh!

Post by BobWilson » October 17th, 2018, 1:44 pm

ESPN's Game Day moving into Pullman as I speak. 100 plus folks at the entrance of town to greet them.. City has declared a state of emergency on Saturday, anticipating increased traffic and crowds. Almost as much excitement as when the first MacDonald's opened 30 years ago! Red Cougs v. Ducks.

I know a lot of my students who plan on showing up (and many of them as senior engineering students could care less about football at this point and are just trying to graduate and find jobs).

I hope traffic isn’t too bad. We are coming back from a Scout camping trip around 2PM, and hope there is a decent route through town.

2:30 PM Thursday - the Walmart parking lot is 90% filled with campers as are several university lots. The Lewis ton Tribune has a story of NY City Cougs driving three hard days to make the game.

This sort of enthusiasm for Cougar FB I first noted some 60 years ago -regardless of the team record. A classmate who lived in Seattle made the 600 mile round trip for virtually every game until his death two years ago. He missed about 8 games in 60 years.

25 years ago the Chamber of Commerce asked folks in private homes to make room for visitors for games and other events such as graduation. Since there have been three large hotels built. But clearly, this week is something special.

There are people on the west side who purchase small condos in Pullman just for football season.

They can have my bedroom for $500 a night. I'll even make them breakfast :)

And as the sun set in the west, the Cougs racked their 4th straight win over the Ducks. All's well that ends well!

It got a little scary in the second half, but that last drive by the Cougs was a thing of beauty.

UW fans everywhere are tipping a glass to those nice, harmless folks in the Palouse. (All dirt roads lead to Pullman!) Thanks guys!
