Tragic news! And one of his daughters was on the plane. A 13 year old.

I may be the biggest Laker hater out there, but this stinks so much. I never liked Kobe, but I respected him. He was the closest thing to Jordan about being able to go and get a bucket. He was also a devoted father, and from all accounts, spent tons of time with his daughters. Another point of respect. R.I.P. Kobe. Prayers to the family.

it's been so foggy here for the past three days I damn near died driving to work today, zero visibility in spots. Fog isn't typical this time of year, I hit some the other night and thought I was in the twilight zone

He showed up here in Central Washington unannounced at a basketball game in population 3000 Cashmere a couple weeks back to watch his daughter’s friend who she had met at a basketball camp play a game. He was extremely gracious with the small town attention it stirred.

Alyssa Altobelli, her father John Altobelli, her mother Keri Altobelli also died.
Christina Mauser too.
Payton Chester and his mom Sarah Chester.
And Ara Zobayan

I'm hearing "and seven others" way too much... it seems like a terribly dismissive way of acknowledging them.

So ... any thoughts on the pilot refusing to fly on instruments, with a filed flight plan, and instead asked for tracking while flying eyes only through the fog?

Why does somebody do that?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

It's easy to ask why now. It is pretty difficult to get a clearance down there on short flights (just too many people). The ICON??? jet crashed in Logan a bunch of years ago doing basically the same thing. That was one was rumored to be a directive from the boss in back saying land here or find a new job. No one died so it went pretty well unnoticed.

Having said that the pilot is going to get hammered in this investigation. Lots of people think this might finally be the end of special vfr which he was trying to use.

This post is likely straight up poor sarcasm and cannot be taken seriously.

Ultimately, it is the pilot’s responsibility to make the call. He should have told them to start driving.
