Absalom

O Absalom, my son, my son,
Would G-d I had died for you.
O Absalom, my son, my son.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

If you are quoting this from "The Choice" by O.G. Mandino, I think it's a great book!

Re: Absalom

Post by USU78 » August 27th, 2020, 9:42 am

A comforting thought came to me unbidden this morning. He had been a choking risk his whole life. The damage to his body from his birth mother's multiple substance abuse left him with that, along with so many physical and other handicaps.

I'd been beating myself up that (a) I was nowhere close to where he was at the crisis and (b) those couple of minutes before he passed out must've been so terrifying. Especially the second.

Then the thought comes: we are terrified of what we don't know. He knew the drill on choking. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the times I cleared choking incidents for him while he was directly under my care. As he passed out, he must've known that someone was coming to help, even though help proved insufficient this one terrible last time. He had such faith in those around him, it would never have occurred to him to doubt, and he wasn't alone for an instant.

That helps. A lot.

The message I received was one of kindness. Letting me off the hook. Assuring me that the passing was not at all what I had imagined. As much as I dread today, and dreaded his inevitable loss, given how much he'd declined over the past couple of years, it was kindness that took him quickly, on an unremarkable morning, doing unremarkable things.

He loved the Disney princesses to obsession. Every morning the staff printed him a picture or two, which he would then color. He never picked up the last ones. They saved them for me. Another kindness.

The universe is not unfeeling. It's not unkind. Difficult, yes, and often grim, but not unkind. A manchild in decline is granted release. A father spared his guilt. G-d is so very kind.

You have my respect, my friend. You reached out and provided a life saving branch to a child desparately in need. His life was better because of you, there is no doubt. Its clear to see the road hasn't been easy, but you endured under what had to be very difficult circumstances. We need more USU78s. Thank you for your kindness to someone in need. What a blessed day that reunion will be.
