Morton Thiokol
Morton Thiokol
I just watched the Netflix special on the Challenger tragedy. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. Anyways, obviously there is a lot about Thiokol in there. I have not lived in the area since I graduated several years ago. What is Thiokol like now? What are they in the business of doing without the shuttle program? How big is the workforce compared to the 90s?

For starters, Thiokol is no more. It was ATK Thiokol, then Orbital ATK, now it's part of Northrup Grumman as far as I know.

In 2008, the shuttle program ended. In 2009, the Minute Man missile refurbishing program ended. ATK had not programmed replacement contracts. The ATK Promontory facility went from a workforce of over 6000 to about 1500. It was a real kick in the pants to northern Utah on top of a nationwide recession.
Northrop Grumman bought the facilities and has been awarded the latest NASA heavy lift rocket contract. Things are ramping back up but it will be another year or so before it's really cooking out there again.

I know several people that were casualties of that downsizing. Many good-paying jobs with great benefits just vanished. I’ll watch it. I worked there in the space shuttle department scheduling and material control. Never forget that day. At my desk, listening on my radio. We all just walked around in a fog the balance of the day.

As Thiokol goes, so goes BEHS athletics. How many times have we seen a penciled-in region champ in football suddenly become a bottom third of region team because of Thiokol layoffs?
